“If I tell you all at once, your head might explode!” – #Futurist Jim Carroll
The scope of the future can be staggering, and some people in my audiences struggle with that fact. They can’t comprehend that we might see more change in the next 10 years than we have seen in the last 100.
Can you actually imagine how different your world might be just 10 years from now? You will probably think that it will look much like it does today, but with a few self-driving cars about.
But in my view, it might be significantly different. Bill Gates once made the observation that “most people tend to overestimate the rate of change that will occur on a 2 year basis, and underestimate the rate of change that will occur over 10 years.”
Thinking on a 10 year scale can be challenging, so here’s an exercise – think about what your world would be like without an iPhone or Android device. Take the concept of mobile apps out of your life, and imagine your world around you today.
You wouldn’t have Uber. GPS navigation would probably be spotty. There wouldn’t be a lot of opportunity for you to track your fitness or health activities on a daily basis. The concept of placing a video call from anywhere on the planet to anyone else on the planet wouldn’t exist. You’d still be carrying around a digital camera.
That’s but one substantive, transformative invention – now think about others that have appeared in your life during the last 10 years.
Now try and cast your mind forward 10 years. What new inventions might have come about that could have a similar, staggering impact?
You don’t know where to start?
Then go and visit my ’19 Trends for 2019’ to begin to get a sense of some of the trends bubbling around today that might be similarly transformative in 10 years time.
That might be a good way to begin to think about your future without your head exploding as a result of the scope and magnitude of what is yet to come!

“A healthy fear of failure is just an ingredient for eventual success!” – Futurist Jim Carroll
Remember that phrase: fail early, fail often?
History has taught us that some of the most successful product launches of all time were as the result of earlier dismal failures. Apple didn’t get to the iPod without the earlier Newton. (I actually had one, and was at the product launch!)
In fact, Apple is a successful company built on a foundation of repeated successful failures: read my blog post:
“What Will You Do Today to Encourage Successful Failure?”
https://jimcarroll.com/…/what-will-you-do-today-to-encoura…/
Why is failure a critical ingredient for success? Consider how it is a critical pathway for getting ahead:
– Innovators fail fast.
– Innovators who fail fast learn faster.
– Innovators who learn faster from faster failure master the faster change that surrounds them
– Innovators master a faster world better than others, because they master fast failure.
Study it carefully – there’s valuable insight in there!
Failure is important – without it, you don’t learn enough, fast enough because you spend too much time living in the land of the status quo. That, more than anything, is a good reason to not try to avoid failure, but to embrace it.
You still near to fear its’ consequences, but with a mindset that rather than the results being entirely negative, there are benefits that will come from it. And so, a healthy fear!
If that is the case, are you doing enough in your organization to encourage a culture of failure?
It not, why not?

The rapid evolution of genomic science, the acceleration of gene therapy, the virtualization of healthcare with medical device connectivity, the changing nature of the relationship between patients and doctors, an explosion in medical knowledge – the world of healthcare is in the midst of more change than it has seen in the last 100 years. This pharmaceutical giant brought together a global team to examine issues and opportunities in the world of healthcare, and needed an inspiring keynote to take them on a tour of the sweeping trends that could define their future.

“To supercharge your creativity, fire up your internal rebelalyzer!” – Futurist Jim Carroll
If it’s not a word, it should be!
And if you are going to be a rebel, you’d better make sure that you regularly recharge your rebelliousness. Carry your rebelalyzer with you everywhere you go, ready to fire up your rebellious attitude!
A rebelalyzer? It’s one of those words that in the context of a phrase just makes perfect sense. It came to me during a discussion out on the golf course with a good friend – we were talking about careers & jobs, & how some people just end up thinking about the world differently – and seeing everything in a different way. They end up in odd jobs – perhaps, like mine.
Rebels? They’re the ones who can reinvent the world at the drop of a hat. That’s because rebellion has a lot to do with creativity, and creativity is the root of all innovation. You can’t have the latter without the former.
Steve Jobs captured the essence of the reality of rebels in his quote: “Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently…”
To get ahead, be a rebel!
Be at odds with other people because you view the world through a different lens. Be eager to cast off the past in order to develop a future that will be very, very different!
Change your view of what is permanent – be ready to tear apart the conventional business models that have guided you for ages. Adopt different ideas as to the nature of the product or service that is to be delivered. Be eager to change everything around you to create a future as you see fit.
Be ready to be marginalized though, because people treat the rebellious differently. Your rebellious attitude in changing the future can make you rather unlikable by many! Round pegs don’t like square ones.
That’s why you need to keep your rebellion in place & have a shield against those who will rebel against your rebelliousness. You will need to fire up your rebel energy at every moment!
That’s why you need to carry around a rebelalyzer!

I’m killing some time waiting for my flight in Paris’s Charles de Gaulle airport, and with a little bit of jet-lag, needed to keep myself awake.
With that in mind, here’s a tongue-in-cheek rant, based on what I’ve learned over a 25-year career as a futurist advising companies worldwide on what they must do to deal with the reality of a fast-changing, disruptive world.
(Note: I’ve seen ALL of these circumstances. My mind boggles!)
(ps. I don’t write this post because I need to drum up business. I actually tend to get overbooked! It’s for you to think about the reality of what you are doing with your event and leadership meetings.)
Many organizations prefer to keep a blind eye towards the future. Complacency rules; the status quo is the only objective. A mindset that the boat should not be rocked drives the mindset forward! People are on autopilot, doing the same thing over and over again. An organizational sclerosis settles in, smothering any potential for success.
Is that you?
Probably. If so, I have a simple message for you.
DON’T BOOK ME!!!!!!!
