“People aren’t scared of the future – they’re terrified of new and unfamiliar ideas!” -#Futurist Jim Carroll
The concept of a ‘comfort zone’ is kind of a dumb idea. After all, how can you ever be comfortable if the world around you is constantly shifting, changing, becoming unrecognizable moment by moment?
The result? When change happens, you recoil in fear, and try to retreat into the cocoon of your comfort zone. Yet, that won’t last too long, because the change will eventually capture you and smother you with the unfamiliar.
That’s a bit of a problem if you don’t have the right mindset!
What if you could make your fear go away through better insight? If you know what is coming next, wouldn’t you have a better opportunity to align yourself to it?
On stage, I’ll often speak about the need for an effective form of ‘personal future insight,’ or what I call your ‘personal trends radar.’ You develop one to enhance your anticipate what comes next, and plan for it accordingly. Much of what will happen in the future is already around us, and so many aspects of the future are blindingly obvious!
How do you develop this radar? Much of it has to do with the company that you keep on a day to day basis.
Do you live inside a ‘fear bubble’ that is constantly reinforced by those around you? (Maybe you live in Iowa, LOL!) Change it. Hang out with optimists, innovators, positive minded people, individuals who are busy designing the future, and those who are focused on the opportunity of what comes next.
Avoid the negative people – the downers, the whiners, the complainers, skeptics, the anti-science losers. These folks have a future anti-virus engineered into their DNA. Spend time with them, and you’ll be guaranteed to live a life of fear with what comes next, while what comes next is going to happen to you anyways!
If you spend more time understanding what comes next and prepare yourself for it, the issue of fear from unfamiliar ideas pretty much disappears!
