Virtual. That. Works.
I’m pretty convinced that as we roll back to some sort of strange new world, that virtual will play a HUGE role in hybrid events.
Plus, if you want a spaceship, I’ll give you a spaceship.
I’m ready. Are you?

I recently established a new video series to address some of the many questions that come to me over the course of the week. I take a look at the questions that arrive and choose one or two a week that might provide some useful insight.
One visitor asked “what’s the future of globalization? How will trade patterns and supply chains change as a result of what’s happened in the last year?” Here’s what I filmed in the virtual broadcast studio yesterday.
Here’s what we know:
It’s not as though supply chains and global trade were already being transformed. Protectionist moves and the impact of the 2008-09 downturn were already dominating the trend:
This is all pretty obvious – so what does it mean? I had this to say in the video:
The ultimate impact of our post-Covid world is that it will amplify the weaknesses of those who were not already aligning to a fast future.
Think about that in the context of retailers who did not have an e-commerce strategy; they thought they had 10 years to prepare, but only had a matter of weeks. Companies that were talking about localization because of trends that were already underway pre-pandemic suddenly found their lack of action exposed.
The long-term impact?
Upheaval, resilience, skills issues, and more!

“Define yourself with your attitude. Reinforce it through your actions.” – Futurist Jim Carroll
One year ago today, in a post entitled Broadcast Studio Update: “The future doesn’t stop with volatility – only your initiative does!”, I announced to the world that I was entirely ready to deliver virtual presentions. The post is here. I went out live to a multiple number of social media platforms; it was the early days of virtual!
The title that I gave myself in this inaugural live video by which I made the announcement: take a look! Optimistic Futurist!
Looking back, I don’t think anyone was listening when I spoke. The global economy was in the midst of a pretty rapid meltdown – the big one would follow in about 10 days’ time. Other people around me were only just beginning to realize this virus thing was going to have a big impact – I’d been preparing for reality for several weeks by this point. The news cycle was beginning to ramp up with stories on how bad it might get, and people were starting to hoard toilet paper. (One politician was telling the world that the virus would magically disappear; those with a functioning cortex had stopped listening to him a long time ago.)
With the realization that my business was melting down all around me, II hit the studio with my newly established live production platform.
Take a look – it was pretty sophisticated, LOL!
The simple act of giving myself the title of “Optimistic Futurist” defined what I would work to accomplish through the next 365 days.
(It looks a little diferent today)
What’s the key lesson? My actions each and every day – in heading into the studio and learning – and going live with an event every second day or so – have defined my ability to live up to the title of Optimistic Futurist that I gave myself.
We define ourselves by the attitude we adopt, and the actions we take. This much I know to be true.
Here’s the original post, one year ago on this date, with video.
Here’s an update as I continued yesterday to ensure that my home office broadcast studio is ready to go …
I’ll have full details next week as to the full range of online service offerings. Know this – when you are ready to go, I will be as well!

“If you don’t know what’s next, you won’t do what’s next!” – Futurist Jim Carroll
Most people live to believe that the tomorrow they will wake up in today will be much like yesterday.
In that famous phrase of deep analysis – LOL.
Covid-19 has obviously shifted the universe of our future in a dramatic new fashion, and yet there are few people in strategic positions who are really thinking things through as to what it all means. I’ve been busy at that.
In my ‘Ask a Futurist‘ film from earlier in the week, I took on the question of ‘what comes next with pharmacies?’ One of the trends that I spoke about involved the changing nature of the relationship between pharmacist and patient. As I’ve explained in many previous global healthcare keynotes – I was with a senior global leadership just a few months before Covid! – this has pretty profound implications for what is yet to come in the world of healthcare.
And the thing about Covid is – it has accelerated all of these trends. If the future was fast before, well, LOL. The jokes on you if you can’t keep up!
One of the most profound changes has been the collision of new forms of doctor-patient interaction online, and medical device connectivity. For the latter, more people have discovered the benefits that come from remote medical monitoring tech – glucose or blood pressure monitoring.
Silicon Valley has taken notice – and you can even imagine what might come next. I can! It’s in the photo!
The impact of these colliding trends? A faster pace of the virtualization of healthcare, more advanced medical device technology – and a faster arrival of the fiction behind the science as it becomes reality.
Are you thinking about what’s next, and what you need to do about it? For the pharmacy profession, it’s by understanding and aligning to these trends that you will have a concrete structure for what you need to do – next!
I’ve love to take on your question – send them in via https://ask.jimcarroll.com

“It’s from the smallest of beginnings that the greatest of opportunities will flourish!” – Futurist Jim Carroll
Think big, start small, scale fast!
That’s my mantra. You already know that.
I don’t just say it. I live it.
On the left is what I faced just one year ago today when I walked into my basement – and realized it would be my future for some time to come. On the right is a screengrab from a production I delivered just six months later. That’s fast!
If you don’t dream big things, you’ll always do the small things.
If you never reach beyond your boundaries, you’ll never break free of the space you live within.
If you don’t work to free yourself from that which is holding you back, you’ll always be stuck with where you are.
If you don’t work hard to capture the ideas exploding in your imagination, you’ll never discover the opportunities of the possibilities they represent.
If you don’t work to reinvent yourself, you’ll never achieve the scope of your possible potential.
I don’t just say these things – I live and breathe these things each and every day. It’s not hot air – it’s oxygen, fuel for my action, energy for my enthusiasm.
It’s been an interesting year!
And what is it ‘they’ say?
The best is yet to come!

And so there it is!
One year ago today, it was clear that my universe was shifting – my keynote life on stage in Las Vegas and elsewhere was coming to an end for quite some time, and that I had to reinvent FAST! Facebook and Cisco had just announced the cancellation of their annual users’ conferences – the reality of the collapse of the meeting industry was clear.
I’d been watching the signs already for a month – this was confirmation.
I remember that I grieved for about two hours that day – and then decided I had to move to the ‘Acceptance’ stage of the 7 Stages of Economic Grief.
I already had a green wall for the pre-event videos I was filming and producing with my overseas producer – and yet, on that very day, announced that I was ready to do virtual – because I was!
I even announced to the world that I was ready in a blog post – even before other people knew that the old world was over for a time! It’s kind of fun to read one year later.
