“In 2020, the future truly belonged to those who were fast!” – Futurist Jim Carroll

For all the tragedy, pain, turmoil, upheaval, hatred, and insanity, 2020 will be one day looked back upon as a pivotal year in which the world learned to operate at fast-forward speed!

Science was faster. Companies collaborated differently. People discovered new forms of personal productivity. Reinvention was everywhere. New business models suddenly blossomed. Individuals discovered new forms of creative innovation inspiration that they never knew they possessed. It was an awful year, but people learned how to manage the best they could through personal velocity.

And what a voyage it has been! I never had any idea last year on this day that in just one year, I’d be doing virtual broadcasts from my basement. But, here we are!

Maybe the defining characteristic of all of us who defined our future through reinvention rather than hateful, angry torrents of small-minded venom was our optimism and belief in our fellow humans. Way back on March 11, when it became clear that the pandemic would lead to a global shutdown, I wrote a pivotal post that reflected my mindset as I immediately worked to focus on optimism. This is what I wrote:

So with all this going on, what is the basis for optimism?

Ideas, science, innovation, disruption, big thinkers, global collaborative thinking! It’s all there. Plenty of big ideas and big companies were launched in the midst of economic uncertainty.

One of the most fascinating trends that I’m watching is the global collaborative medical, science and epidemiology hive-mind work the collaborative Internet to try to figure out a pathway for this ‘thing.’

I’m seeing extremely fast genomic science as they sequence the virus to discover concepts; the rapid sharing on insight into methods of treatment and who is at risk; fast collaboration on how to do “parking lot tent-diagnosis.”

One day in the future, we will look back and see that healthcare forever changed – & that is right now. It’s a marvel to see in acton in real-time!

That and so much more is the foundation for my optimism.

Success is a series of failures punctuated by small wins, built upon the experience of hope!

At least, that’s what I’ve worked hard to convince myself is a truth!

I see many people who try to succeed at something but only put in a marginal effort. They don’t go through all of the steps, thinking there might be an easy way to achieve success. They are unwilling to commit to the hard work that is involved in real reinvention.

And then one day they sit back and wonder why things didn’t work out the way they hoped they would!

As we head into 2021. it’s critical to realize that it will truly be a transformative year. If 2020 was the year of reckoning with reality, the next one is a year of reinvention and rebirth. Entire industries and professions have been forever changed, and those who discover the disruptive shift and what it implies will be those who succeed.

I plan to be a part of it! And so I work hard to have a small failure in my virtual studio at least every second day! I developed a stage style on great stages that was pretty effective, and which brought me to events worldwide. Each moment I take a small step in my virtual studio, I’m one leap closer to achieving the same thing in a new, virtual world.

I have no plans to be a mediocre performer – I intend to shine with the radiance of optimistic action!
