A throwback to my pre-keynote update before hitting the stage in front of global wealth managers at an event in Nassau, Bahamas.
The future? Getting the timing right is one of the most important things you can do!

I’ve long observed, when challenging my audience to align to the future, that there are 3 types of people in my audience:
Here’s a clip where I am talking about that issue … and suggesting the mindset that people should be in to find future opportunities.
Sadly, I’ve come to realize in the last few years that there is a 4th category out there: those who deny any of the trends involving the future – and react, ‘that didn’t happen!” The impact? The world of “massively induced fake belief systems” is now and will continue to have a profound impact on the ability of organizations, people and government to align to future trends.
Who are they? This 4th category are those people who build their own belief systems based on false information; who fall prey to obviously incorrect information ; those who are easily manipulated by targeted social media; those who believe everything and anything is part of a vast conspiracy; those who generate their own reality.
What’s the impact? Pretty dreadful, if you think about it. For example, I wrote this into my post, “Trend: The Emerging Health Care Reality Crisis.”
Here’s what I wrote:
Clearly there are vast sections of the population today who do not believe in science. They don’t believe in facts. They don’t believe in much other than what they want to believe in.
Their belief system will increasingly drive their attitude and understanding of their healthcare circumstances.
Going forward, this new reality will prove to be a tremendous challenge for the healthcare system.
Consider this as a potential reality: As the world embarks on a coordinated and challenging response to the Covad-19 pandemic, the fact that a good part of the population will not believe anything they hear, and who will generate their own reality rather than any real reality, will make managing the crisis all that much more difficult.
Buckle in – it’s going to be quite a ride!

“It’s better to have a life well lived than to just live a life!” – Futurist Jim Carroll
Monday’s are for motivation!
So ponder the phrase and live by it! It’s a well known fact that to succeed in business, you need a stable foundation in your personal life. However you can find it, chase it!
I took some time off and just spent the past four days skiing. Of course, an office being wherever my laptop is, I also managed to get some work in over that time.
How was it? My new smart boot technology tells me that I skied well over 80km downhill, achieved more than 90% parallel on those runs (a lower number indicates a loss of technique in challenging terrain) and an average carving ratio of 5.7 (an Olympian racer being a 10!)
It was, as I tell my friends, EPIC! (I will admit they are getting somewhat tired of my constant data updates after each run!)
Skiing? My wife and I decided our family should take up the sport when the recession of 2001-02 rolled around.
Winter was happening, business was challenged, my mindset was focused on how bad things were becoming rather than how good they could be.
So we joined a ski club, bought some skis, rented a chalet for the season, and hit the slopes.
We had no clue what we were doing.
It showed. I was the owner of the snowplow, and in the first year, mastered the technique of how to fall with style.
20 years on, it’s a full blown lifestyle commitment. Living in a winter climate, we know we either embrace winter & boost our success endorphins – or hate it, and go into a never ending season of gloom!
We chose to live a life well lived, rather than to just try to get by.
The process & commitment had a profound impact on my outlook & approach to my business. Each Monday morning became an opportunity to explore new ideas and opportunities, refreshed and energized by doing something different the days before.
My mind and thought process on the hill, while focusing on my potential for skiing elegance (LOL!) is always chasing and pursuing creative ideas while I’m busy chasing a great line.
I’m clearing my head while pursuing opportunity!
Shouldn’t you? Live life!

Here’s a clip where I’m speaking to the fact that product lifecycles are collapsing.
The impact? Car resale values go down! This is just but one aspect of what happens as the era of acceleration takes hold, things speed up, and Moore’s law comes to drive the pace of change in every industry.
When cars come computers, everything changes!
It’s a fascinating time to watch what is going on. As we shift from oil to electric, and from vehicles which we drive to autonomous technology, massive change occurs. I put together this little compilation clip which captures the essence of these trends.

What is happening is clear – are you ready?

“Do a ‘habit inventory.’ Break them. Repeat this on a regular basis!” – Futurist Jim Carroll
Make it a habit to break your bad habits!
Is that a contradiction?
Maybe not — you should use a good habit to get rid of the other ones!
Over 25 years, I’ve seen a lot of organizations miss out on a lot of opportunity because they allow habits to kill their initiative. Habits are the source of the plaque that builds up that causes organizational sclerosis.
The result?
Organizations develop routines which stifle their ability to innovate, change and adapt to our faster world. They keep doing the same old thing, when the assumptions behind that thing no longer apply.
They develop corporate cultures which reward uniformity of action rather than diversity of thinking. They allow too much structure to smother the opportunity that might come from imaginative thinking.
You probaby do this personally too – you develop a comfort zone that guides your every day action. You lose out on spontaneity, living in the now, spur of the moment opportunities.
Habits, routine and structure are the enemies of innovation. They destroy creativity. They inhibit your future. They hold your back.
Habits lock us into patterns that has us doing today what we did yesterday, when there is often no similarity in the circumstances of the day. Even more challenging? Tomorrow will be even more dramatically different – so how will your habits serve you then.
Find habits! Break them!

“Forget regret! Your goal is not to try to change your past – but instead, to transform your future!” – Futurist Jim Carroll
Who hasn’t focused on regret as a pathway for change?
The thing is, it never works.
Obviously, things that have happened yesterday are no longer in your control – you cannot erase a single moment and put it into replay. There is no ‘undo’ button – you’re stuck with what you’ve got today, and your ability to shape what you do tomorrow.
There is no automatic ‘redo.’
Yet I see many of my clients focus far too much on what went wrong yesterday and not enough on tomorrow. Regret for products that should have been great, but weren’t. Strategies that should have been pursued but didn’t pass muster. Markets that should have been focused upon but that were missed.
Yet, regret happens – so what do you do with it? The keys to turn it into an opportunity for future growth!
Our mistakes from yesterday can teach us many lessons about what we might be able to do tomorrow. Closely examining our errors from the past can help us to improve upon tomorrow. Actions taken can teach us lessons for our future.
Once you use ‘regret’ within your analysis, you’re on the wrong track!
Look forward – not back!
