“There’s the future you have. Then there’s the future you’ll create!” – Futurist Jim Carroll

Life is a journey of choices – and each and every day, you have the opportunity to change your path.
What’s your decision today?
I continue to choose to reinvent, reimagine, redo and rethink – that’s my choice! Three months ago, it looked like the event, conference, and meeting industry in which I work might be coming back, and I would find myself on stage once again. Today, the future is looking pretty dire, particularly in regions of the US, where it seems that folks don’t realize that wishful thinking never trumps science. With that, my future is once again uncertain, volatile, and to a large degree pretty unknown!
What can I do about it? Not much, other than to plow ahead with ideas, continuing to explore new boundaries, initiatives, and opportunities. I’m always discovering new pathways because of this – I just finished a virtual project for a client that took a different approach for an online event. I convinced them that few people will sit down and watch a 45-minute or one-hour keynote on Zoom, regardless of how good the virtual set or content might be! Instead, I gave them a tightly produced, content-rich 15-minute virtual tour of their future, and followed up with a 30-minute interview with senior executives on ‘how to get there.’
It’s a format that seems to work, given the clash between the need to stay aligned to trends but the inevitable reality of short attention spans. My mantra for my online work has become built around Pink Floyd – “short, sharp shocks.”
My choice has always been to never give up, continue to explore ideas, rebuild and reinvent my future. It seems to be serving me well as this world of incessant uncertainty continues to cloud our future. In the absence of clarity, I’m choosing to double-down on action!
What’s your plan?

Here’s a clip to get you thinking. This is from a custom virtual keynote production I prepared for a global insurance conference on behalf of my client, Salesforce.

COVID-19 is not a disruption. It’s an accelerant. It has magnified and accelerated everything that is good and everything that is bad.
If you have not realigned your strategic thinking in this new era, you’re now operating at a competitive disadvantage.

“If everyone on your team is laughing at every new idea, you’ve got a bigger problem than you think!” – Futurist Jim Carroll

Laughter is the best medicine – until it becomes an ingrained, destructive force that kills new ideas. And that’s the risk you run if you let a culture of continual skepticism y sink into your organization.
You know that you are failing. Ideas are being lost, opportunities are being squandered, and initiative is in a rut. How do you know? Because you KNOW that your organization has a culture that is killing creativity. When everyone laughs at any new idea, that’s one of the symptoms of what’s gone wrong!
I’m always mystified to find that some organizations just seem to do everything they can to shut down new ideas. In these organizations:
What happens in these companies? They:
And there are certainly more attitudes that help destroy innovative thinking.
Which ones are you guilty of?

“World-class innovators possess a daring need for speed!” – Futurist Jim Carroll

This was a fantastic custom film production I did for Deloitte South Africa starting on this day in 2010!
They needed a keynote on this theme; I was busy with other projects and couldn’t travel, and so we did the next best thing! We filmed an epic, professionally produced video that captured a key theme I had been developing with my research.
With the assistance of my good friend David Mitchell of Riverbank Pictures, we filmed multiple scenes through downtown Toronto, at Pearson Airport, and up north on location at various locations around my ski club, Georgian Peaks. We topped it off with a quick hit-and-run video shoot on the boundary of the Honda of Canada plant in Alliston.
The client was thrilled with the end result – it was used to open a major corporate event around the theme of aligning to the future. Almost 9 minutes long, the video captured 10 key attributes of world-class innovation, an overview I had been focused on based on my experience with Fortune 1000 companies around the world. Here’s the full clip.

We filmed over a two-day period. It’s a family affair here – my son Willie performed a wonderful role in assisting throughout the project, acting as ‘grip’ – the fellow who organizes, moves, assists, lifts, and more. (He was a little more engaged than seen in this photo!)

And for those who know me personally, the fact that we drove an SUV up to the top of the Wiggle in order to lay down some film rails was an absolutely epic moment!

My favorite scene involved a 15 second long bit where I was capturing the essence of the theme that world-class innovators possess a daring need for speed. Standing outside the fence at the end of an active runway at Toronto’s main airport, we had to get the exact moment right when a large plane was coming in for a landing. We needed a 777, 767, or better … and this took multiple attempts until we got the timing right, This is where Willie’s skill with ATC monitoring and flight radar tracking proved to be more than just a passing hobby! Watch the final clip!
Since that time, the “World-class innovators” theme has formed the foundation for dzoens of corporate leadershiop keynotes for major organizations worldwide; I’ve got an entire keynote topic built around in.
In addition, I’ve put together a comprehensive page that outlines in clear detail the key attributes they possess. Where do you rank?
The theme never stops – I’ll regularly uodate my list with new insight, and might drop a new quick film on the theme. For example, here’s a moment where I did a pre-keynote rant on the theme, just after an early morning sound check for a Microsoft event. All in one take!

“Progress often involves slow steps towards the achievable rather than away from the insurmountable!” – Futurist Jim Carroll

Five years into this daily journey of inspiration, I often get that all-knowing look from a friend who knows that I’m quickly writing down or typing in a potential quote that I just heard.
It happens on the golf course, while out for a walk, during a random get-together virtual or otherwise, or during a meeting. My radar seems to be constantly tuned to seeking out inspiration. (One fellow I golf with told me that it has impacted my conversations, in that I tend to talk with exclamation marks!)
And so it was yesterday when I heard a good friend state the obvious – we often judge ourselves too often on our failure to make big, bold leaps, and don’t give ourselves enough credit for the small, irregular steps that we might take along the journey. The result is that we often don’t see our progress, or don’t measure it correctly, because we are looking for the evidence of the massive win, not the small, regular signs of committed success.
This really resonated with me!
As long as we are moving forward, not back, we’re succeeding. As long as we stay committed to our goal, and not shying away from it, we can take pride in our efforts. As long as we do the work towards what we want to accomplish, we’re on the right track.
And so a shout out to my good buddy Ian, for unknowingly providing fuel for my inspiration fire early this morning!
