You’ll do better by opening up your mind to the opportunities than you will be closing it with perceived barriers.
With that in mind here’s a tale of two manufacturing clients that I have had.
One believes that we live in a global economy, and despite their ‘greatness,’ they’d better reinvent themselves fast if they want to play a role in the next economy. With that in mind, they are busy innovating and working with the trends that define the next world of manufacturing: advanced material science, 3d printing, prognostic intelligent products, the Industrial Internet of Things.
They actually stand a working chance!
Another client? How dare other countries steal their market! It’s not right! Let’s support the tariffs, barriers and walls, and try to return to a world that really only existed for a short time in the 1950’.s
I don’t know about you, but my money is on the former. The latter probably won’t last out the decade.
There’s a powerful lesson here – a closed mind is a disease of failure; a sickness of weakness; a symptom of innovation dementia. It doesn’t work, and its outcome is guaranteed.
You have a choice each and every day as to the type of life you will live, the leadership you offer, the motivation you will plan your day by, the optimism you will share.

People don’t like people who talk a great game and then don’t deliver. Those who boast of their greatness & who are really, actually anything but. Those who tell the world that they are really, really big, but are actually, very very small.
Innovative, future oriented people see right through leadership failure – & know it is happening before its eventual result. (While, sadly, others cling to the past & try to relive past glories, but which in the end run is really but a futile attempt that leads to significant failure!) The modern day Apple seems to be skewing to the latter type of leadership.
Steve Jobs was an inspirational machine, delivering on his visions to redefine and disrupt entire industries – he acted! The Apple of today, with Tim Cook at the helm, might be enjoying great market & revenue success, but seems to simply be tweaking around the edges, delivering new emoticons and buggy software updates that infuriate the customer base.
Consider Elon Musk. Despite the ongoing debate over whether Tesla will actually make it or not, he inspires and irritates people – but is getting things done. Cars are being delivered.
One of the golden rules of the future Is this: businesses don’t fail – leaders do!
I’ll never forget the time I gave the opening keynote for the leadership meeting of a large, multi-billion dollar wholesaler. A comfortable industry, solid profits, a determined future. Except, it’s pretty likely that Amazon will destroy their current business model, and they’ll need a new one.

I’m watching the company and guess what – it’s imploding!

Keynote: Schneider Electric, Austin Texas – The Industrial Internet of Things and ReInventing Process Manufacturing
There’s a lot of talk about the Internet of Things. In the world of manufacturing, it goes by the phrase “Industrial Internet of Things.”
Essentially, we will layer billions of sensors throughout manufacturing facilities, which will a lot of ‘machine to machine’, automated communication, automated supply chain with IOT tracking, and subsequent interaction for diagnostics, operating characteristics, health checks, status info and more
And that’s what I covered in my keynote for several hundred customers of this major company involved in this space – the room was full of engineers from chemical, energy and other manufacturing process organizations.

Back in 2003, I pretty much predicted the emergence of the Tesla business model and the disruption occurring today in the automotive industry. I had the details wrong though – in that I suggested that it would Google building this future!
