Disney Predicted Self-Driving Cars, Intelligent Highways, the Hyperloop (And Maybe, the Jetsons) – in 1958!

What is the role of a futurist? We share with you ideas and insight that might help you to figure out what comes next!

That’s what I do, and these days, I’m often using the story of the Jetsons as an example of past predictions which are quickly coming true. While doing my ongoing research on the Jetsons, I came across a remarkable video that came out of Disney, and featuring Walt Disney himself, that predicated the trends that we would see with cars and highways into the future. It’s called Magic Highway USA, and it’s pretty remarkable for the accuracy of the predictions. Backup cameras, traffic maps, radar and so much more.

Check out the video from 3:45 seconds …. with the autonomous vehicle, and one which flies! This seems to be the Jetsons before they appeared on TV in 1962. And from that point, it’s a full self-driving car, with time dedicated to working, watching TV and other activities while the car drives itself. Not just that — rocket transport at 6:55, and the Hyperloop at 7:48.

The folks at New Equipment Digest interviewed me a few weeks back for an article on manufacturing, ahead of a major keynote I had earlier this month.

You’ll have a 50-year old guy or lady in the factory, and you bring these tools to help streamline processes and they say, “Oh my God! This is terrible that can take my job away. I’m done; I’m toast.” And somebody in their 20’s is going to say, “cool.” It’s a much more agile workforce, much more willing to try new things.

It’s but one talk I do in this sector; on Monday, I’ll headline the International Asset Management Council on future manufacturing trends. They’re the folks from Fortune 1000 organizations who make the decisions on where to locate future factories, logistics locations and supply chain investments.

“Sometimes, to be the best you can be, you need the support of a great partner!” – Futurist Jim Carroll

30 years ago today, a young woman met a guy – he smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day, drank too much, didn’t have the faintest idea of what exercise was, ate junk food, and babbled nonsense about some strange online technology that would change the world.

For some strange reason, she accepted his offer to buy a ticket on an Oktoberfest trip — he had bought 75 tickets and had rented a bus, and was desperately trying to break even. She went on the trip 2 days later, and for some reason, found him to be of interest.

A romance bloomed, a marriage happened, and 2 wonderful children arrived. Today, miraculously, she is still with him, through better and worse, and travels the world with him…. Happy anniversary Christa!

Last week, I was the opening keynote speaker for the annual SOMOS Toll-Free Users Summit – it’s the annual conference for the folks involved in the 1-800 industry. Obviously, there was a big focus on the issues of customer support and interaction, and my keynote took a look at those trends.

They’ve just run a blog post that captured one of the key themes in my keynote : that is, how do we keep up with the fact that consumer and customer demands are changing faster than ever before!
