This week they are holding the 100th annual PGA Tournament in St. Louis. I’ve been fortunate enough to be invited in to speak to senior leadership of the organization twice on innovation strategies for growing the game.
And, I golf. A lot. I just did the math, and I’m at 51 rounds at my home golf course. Since I walk most of those, I figure I’m at 200+ miles of walking. I’ve got a tee time today at 740am – its Seniors Day!
I was never a golfer – I was a total hack. Then, my youngest son got quite good, developed a 1-handicap, and told me one day that I was embarrassing. Then, most of my events ended up being at nice golf resorts in Orlando, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Palm Springs…. I had no choice but to take up the sport.
Today, I’m an 18 handicap. This means that when I play well, I can get below 90. I’m getting fairly consistent at that – not many people do. My goal is to be able to play 85 fairly consistently. I have a lot of work to do.
The thing about golf is that it is a psychological voyage that mirrors life itself. There are great moments – there are bad moments – and when a river runs through it, there is crushing despair. No matter – there’s always the next hole! Bob Rotella lives in my mind!
Live your life the same way. There is a lot of crap thrown at you on a regular basis. Don’t focus on that, but live and strive for the next great moment!
