“There’s no time to learn, to study, to plan. With that being your new reality, figure out what you don’t know, and do the things that are necessary to begin to know about it! Experiential capital is the new capital for the 21st century!” – #Futurist Jim Carroll

The quote is directly from my Web page, “The Reality of Disruption
(24 Reasons Why Your Company Might Die Before You Get Old)” https://disruption.jimcarroll.com
If you don’t know why the world around you is changing, and why your business and industry will be unrecognizable in 5 or 10 years, study the list!
Take a look at the final item – the quote above.
Where did it come from? Way back in 1999, twenty years ago, I began talking on stage about the idea of what I called “experiential capital.”
I crystallized it into a PDF I put together a few years later, “10 Unique Characteristics of 21st Century Skills” I pretty much nailed the future of talent management, as all of the trends in the PDF continue to accelerate today. Give it a read:
/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/HRTrends.pdf
One of those characteristics? This one!
Skills are Experiential.
One of the most important assets that a company can invest in is “experiential capital”—that is, the cumulative knowledge the company has generated through innovation, risk, failure and success. Boost that skills capability and you’ve done something that flows onto the bottom line
Simply put, my theory – and the reality today – is this: old knowledge is going out of date faster than ever before, and new knowledge is the key to success. Yet it is all happening so fast that it is almost impossible to learn about the things that you don’t yet know about.
You need to plan in the absence of clarity; you need skills that you don’t yet know exist.
How do you deal with this? By continually working with new projects, exploring new ideas, challenging your next frontier. You have a rough idea of what you need to learn about – chase it, don’t study!
Pursue experience, rather than knowledge & the knowledge will come!

Watch it – and then, ask yourself : are you really operating with the speed and agility that you require in our modern day world?

Update: Ian Webb, PGA Professional, passed away on the evening of September 7, surrounded by his close family. We are immensely saddened, but blessed to have encountered his greatness in love, spirit, and enthusiasm for life.
“You can measure your success in greatness – or kindness. The latter will guarantee you the former!” – Futurist Jim Carroll

Every once in a while you will have a momentary interaction with greatness.
Learn from it, be inspired by it, & embrace the message that you see. And take the time to understand what defines greatness – because greatness comes not only from achieving the most in your personal area of endeavour, but but by the kindness and compassion that comes from the essence of your soul.
So begins my story of the last 48 hours – & golfing legend Jack Nicklaus.
The Chief Operating Officer at my home golf club, Credit Valley Golf & Country Club, Ian Webb, was diagnosed in the spring with glioblastoma, the aggressive brain cancer that took the life of Canadian rock icon Gord Downie. Ian is currently in treatment.
It is beyond difficult to describe the measure of support & respect that the Canadian PGA professional & golf community has for Ian. If you ever met him, talked with him, had the chance to interact with him – you will have met kindness and graciousness defined. His diagnosis took the community into shock and disbelief.
The Canadian golf community has rallied around Ian online and in other ways, under the hashtag #WebbyStrong – look it up on Twitter. Everyone is offering up messages of support & love for Ian.
Enter golfing legend and icon Jack Nicklaus.
In my career, I have been blessed to rise to the top of the global speaking industry. I am so lucky with my career, and in in awe each and every moment – I’m represented by many of the global speaker bureau giants who represent the icons of the sporting, business and entertainment world – Barack & Michelle Obama, Richard Branson, Michael Douglas.
I thought I might try to approach Jack via one of our respective agents, to ask if he might share a message of support for Ian, by wearing one of the iconic #Webbystrong shirts.
A few days back, his office contacted me & said yes. Encouraged, I pushed a little, asking for a bit more…. The result? In addition to his public message of support on social media, Jack spent 15 minutes on a private phone call with Ian – sharing stories at length about golf, life, love, leadership, kindness and family.
The impact on my good friend Ian has been incalculable.
The reaction from the Canadian golfing community is profound.
The lesson I have learned is life changing.
Someone can be great by virtue of what they accomplish in business, sports or entertainment. But that is only a part of overall success. It is defined by so much more.
Jack could have ignored my request. I can only imagine the incalculable demands on the time for someone of such stature. But he didn’t. And by virtue of doing so, I believe he has taught so many of us that greatness doesn’t just come from one’s ability – it comes from the compassion and kindness in their soul.
Bottom line? Jack Nicklaus is greatness, defined.

“Think fast. Be faster!” – Futurist Jim Carroll

In a few weeks, I’ll be speaking at Revionics Insight 2019, one of the leading events in the retail industry.
As part of the process, I’ve done yet another detailed research dump – essentially, I grabbed about 750 articles about some of the latest trends sweeping the retail sector from my go-to tool, Dow Jones Factiva.
I’ve been making my way through them in order to bring my deck up to date. (You won’t get canned ‘crap’ with my talks!) And when you re-immerse yourself in an industry, you again realize that the issue of speed truly defines success.
Think about the change underway – Amazon continues to define every single aspect of retail. Stores need to be able to deliver product almost instantly, provide for in-store pickup after an order is placed on mobile or have cutting edge in store displays to grab shorter consumer attention spans.
Product lifecyles continue to collapse – today’s fashion is tomorrow’s retro-bin, faster than ever before.
People expect your e-commerce infrastructure to be as good as, if not better, than Amazon’s, in terms of status, updates and insight.
And new competitors continue to rush into your space, disrupting your business model, challenging your concepts, redefining your ideas, or cutting your margins to the bone.
A few days ago I wrote a blog post for the event, and said this: “It’s hard to discount the speed of change that continues to envelop the retail sector. Consider this: E-commerce could be 25% of the total retail – grocery and convenience — experience by 2021. In store, cash registers are disappearing, pick-and-pack is dominating retailers attention, and Amazon-style disruption is everywhere.
And then: “Some have said that we have seen more change in the world of retail in the last 5 years than we have seen in the last 100, and the pace of change is only going to increase.” That’s the retail industry. EVERY industry is faced with similar fast rates of disruptive change.
You need big strategy, bold ideas, and fast execution.
You need to think fast. But that means nothing if you don’t *act* faster.

“Seriously, will things really become ‘great again’ when the rest of the world is laughing at you?” – Futurist Jim Carroll

If you follow me, you’ll know that I’ll often talk about the “Innovation Killers” – the ideas and attitudes that can hold an organization back from achieving greatness.
One of the phrases that are used to kill innovation? Take a look at my list —> “That’s the dumbest thing I ever heard”
I’ve made the point that we should never discount dumb ideas because they can often be rocket fuel for great, creative, innovative thinking.
But the thing is – there are dumb ideas. And then, there are absolutely stupid ideas.
The reality show that is today’s world is really getting out of hand, don’t you think? It’s jumped the shark because now you really can’t know what harebrained idea is going to be launched next.
Douse an economy with 100-basis points of stimulus gasoline, removing any potential tools for an inevitable future downturn? Float a personal tax cut because your other actions are actively taking money out of people’s pockets? Become a global laughingstock because you cancel a visit over their absolute ridicule of an absolutely crazy idea?
The reality show is almost like we are in elementary school – we all watched the idiotic things that the classroom bully would do each and every day. We all *knew* that it wouldn’t end well and just waited patiently for the inevitable meltdown. We all whispered amongst ourselves as to how ridiculous the individual was; we all consoled ourselves with the belief that he or she would be kicked out of class.
The world awaits.
When it comes to innovation, we’ve got to build a future that encourages crazy ideas; out of norm ideas; big, far-reaching ideas that seem to be in the land of the unattainable.
But we also need to recognize that sometimes ideas can go too far, and simply serve no other purpose than to an accelerant for laughter.
Dumb ideas that are, just, well, too dumb to be stupid.
I’m trying to temper my comments here.
