“Optimism. It’s your fuel for your future!” – Futurist Jim Carroll

I have a good friend who accuses me having relentless optimism at the best of times. He’s a skeptic on so many fronts & I always work to bring him back from the edge of his pessimism.
And so here we are today!
What choice do we have but to remain hopeful? What’s the alternative? Wallowing in self-induced, obsessive misery?
We all know that we are in unprecedented territory with Covid-19. If you want to cut through the noise & really understand what we need to do, look up the phrase “Flatten the Curve.”
That’s all the insight you need right there! Our only option is to try to slow its relentless advance in order to try to reduce the forthcoming demand on an already fragile healthcare system.
And that simple concept brings us optimism.
The economy is hurting – yes, it will get worse before it gets better. In a response on this issue on Twitter yesterday as to when we might see a recession, I wrote:
“Uh, it’s already in recession. We just don’t have the numbers yet. Also, the next wave – layoffs, downsizing, failures, shutdowns – have not yet begun. We’re at early days yet, even as we are about to hit the curve of strain on healthcare.”
So with all this going on, what is the basis for optimism?
Ideas, science, innovation, disruption, big thinkers, global collaborative thinking! It’s all there. Plenty of big ideas and big companies were launched in the midst of economic uncertainty.
One of the most fascinating trends that I’m watching is the global collaborative medical, science and epidemiology hive-mind work the collaborative Internet to try to figure out a pathway for this ‘thing.’
I’m seeing extremely fast genomic science as they sequence the virus to discover concepts; the rapid sharing on insight into methods of treatment and who is at risk; fast collaboration on how to do “parking lot tent-diagnosis.”
One day in the future, we will look back and see that healthcare forever changed – & that is right now. It’s a marvel to see in acton in real-time!
That and so much more is the foundation for my optimism.
What’s yours?

Today, whether you agree or not, it’s clear that the global economy changed.
What has it changed to?
No one is certain, but what we can be sure of is that many industries will be fundamentally different; job losses and cutbacks will occur; some companies won’t make it; there will be pain and grief; turmoil is our new normal for a time.
For how long, we do don’t know.

But here’s the other aspect that I know from my previous participation in significant economic downturns after 9/11, ’08 and earlier: the future doesn’t stop. In fact, economic volatility often provides massive opportunities for disruptive thinking.
Business models will continue to evolve at a faster pace; new revenue opportunities will continue to emerge; customer expectations will continue ramp up in terms of quality and service; we’ll see the ongoing emergence of new competitors; product life-cycles will continue to shorten as innovation speeds up; a lot of science will happen; new inventions will be discovered; and a lot of transformative change will occur in markets and industries as really innovative people continue to shake up the fundamentals.
Big disruption occurs in periods of big uncertainty. What will you do today to align to those realties?
During previous downturns, I was brought in by CEO’s of dozens of organizations to speak to their team on volatility and recession strategies. Gosh, I was really busy late 2008-2010 just with recession-recovery keynotes!
During that time, I’ve seen and have worked with two different types of organizations and leaders.
The first category? I’ve seen innovation failures — companies that are stuck in their economic rut, and unable to figure out what to do next.
The second category? Real pioneers and fast-movers. They are the innovation leaders — they have the same sentiment I repeat incessantly in that they know they can’t panic — they have to go forward by innovating, changing and adapting.
Who are you?
And if the former, what’s holding you back? I think there are several common attributes:
Bill Gates once observed that “We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten. Don’t let yourself be lulled into inaction.”
It couldn’t have been put better.
What’s your choice – to be an innovation leader, aware of where we are going in the future, or an innovation laggard, still mired in short term thinking?
Think growth!

The day Lehman Brothers went down in 2008, at an event where I was on stage, a CEO spoke to his team on how to react.
The guidance was vivid, to the point, and spot on. It profoundly impacted what I did that day and every day going forward. I filmed this clip 5 minutes after the opening market meltdown yesterday. Useful guidance!

“Life is 98% capitalizing on your optimism – and 2% managing your brief, small moments of panic!” – Futurist Jim Carroll

I’ve seen this movie before. I know how it ends.
The future? It certainly isn’t over. Its arrival has just slowed down by a small degree!
And it’s not like we didn’t know this was coming – in fact, the “Recession of 2020-21” category rolled out my blog last August! This long sustained period of economic growth lasted far too long ; it was bound to unwind. It just needed a kicker like Covid-19 and an oil price shock to set it into dramatic motion.
Yesterday? The global economy was already rolling down a hill for a time, but suddenly fell off a cliff. But the future tells us that at the bottom of the cliff, there’s a small hill, and eventually, another mountain. It will get there – we just don’t know when. There’s a lot of fog about!
With that in mind, it’s what you do in the next few weeks and months that will define your future. I’m certainly of that mindset!
Early yesterday, I bolted down to the home broadcast studio 5 minutes after the markets opened. I immediately filmed a live video clip for my followers on what I saw on the same day, with the same circumstances, when Lehman Brothers went down in 2008, heralding a similar dramatic crash.
The guidance from that CEO was powerful and affected me at that moment, and for every moment going forward. The video will go up shortly – but in essence, my ‘uncertainty mantra’ was clear defined —> “Freeze? Panic? Or innovate?”
To me, the choice is clear.
The decisions you make this morning will define your future.
Everything from this moment forward comes one day at a time – but put those days together, and you’ve got some serious momentum towards recovery.
And the most important thing you need right now to keep that momentum going is your optimism.
Optimism is your oxygen, your sustenance, your vitamin-D of the future, your sunshine.
Keep it, nurture it, sustain it!
