“The thing about con-men – at least they are consistent in meeting our lowered expectations!” – Futurist Jim Carroll

A few weeks ago, I decided that I would no make any political commentary on social media for at least 8 weeks – we live in a massively polarized world, and there is no upside.

Having said that, prospective clients often do ask me for my views as a futurist on the global economy, macro economic trends and more. With that in mind, my attention was drawn this week to the fact that the CEO’s of 8 major pharmaceutical companies felt compelled to indicate that they would, first and foremost, let the integrity of the scientific process guide their actions with respect to a Covid-19 virus.

I can’t believe they had to make such a statement, but hey, 2020. I filmed a reaction piece yesterday in the home broadcast studio, based on a post I wrote back in 2017:

Trends: What Comes Next with the Decline of an Empire?

Read this key line from that post:

There are real economic implications in a time in which a nation chooses to turn its back on the rest of the world. The impact likely won’t be apparent for years to come, but clearly decisions are now being made now which will change the global economy in significant ways.

Quite clearly, the last several years have seen a massive change in terms of global power, and the implications will be felt for years to come. I’d encourage you to read points 9 and 10 in that post, and consider those in light of the statement by these CEO’s. Take a look at what I said in the studio yesterday.

Right now, there are huge opportunities for nations around the world to step into this big leadership vacuum, to provide an environment for new investment, knowledge generation, and next generation innovation to provide for new economic opportunity. When a nation has lost its way, the reality is that the barn door for the future is wide open, and all you need to do is step right in!
