Inaction is deadly: at this very moment, someone is busy working to destroy your business model!” – #Futurist Jim Carroll

I meet some senior executives within my global clients for whom it seems that doing nothing has become the norm. Decisions are deferred, because it is easier to deny the future than it is to make the difficult changes necessary to align to it. A culture of inaction settles in – denial is the root of much failure. An inability to generate the courage for a particular course of action defines an unwavering commitment to marginal motion towards the future.

Once they decide to move forward, the decisions that are taken are timid, cautious, small and insignificant.

Mediocrity defines the reach of their action.

Did I just define your situation?

At the same time that you let this cultural complacency overtake you, the disruptors are out there. They are busy rethinking & reimagining the world that you currently do business in.

They’re using advanced technology, defined by big bold moves & grand visions. They’re moving faster than you are, knowing that the organizational sclerosis which has clogged up your culture gives you a fundamental innovation deficit. They are aligning themselves to partner with the advanced skills of tomorrow, rather than trying to mollify the old irrelevant workforce of yesterday.

And when it comes to the future, they are going to arrive there in better shape than you do. In fact, they might already be nearing the finish line by the time you decide that it’s probably time to start running the race.

Over a 25 year career on stage, I’ve seen enough of these attitudes to know that they are true – and I know many companies are ill-prepared for the tsunami of disruption that is headed their way – or which is already crashing around them.

Take a moment to go and read my post, “The Reality of Disruption (24 Reasons Why Your Company Might Die Before You Get Old)”. Figure out which of those disruptive trends is changing your world & which you are ill-prepared to manage.
