“Mind the innovation velocity gap!” – #uturist Jim Carroll

I was in London for barely 36 hours on the weekend, returning from my keynote in Oman. It’s still an exhilarating city – and like everyone, I’m fascinated by its scope, size, speed, complexity.

And of course, the Tube!

Of course, I immediately began thinking about the “Mind the Gap” phrase you hear on the Tube. It works on so many different levels – a disruption gap, competitors gap, knowledge gap and more!

Too many organizations and people let the gap between their reality and the speed of change become too large, too much of a chasm.

So I began working the phrase. And at 2am this morning, jet lagged and awake (it’s 11am in Oman), I was running through a variety of words that might work with “Mind the Gap”. I hit upon the perfect one, but then fell back asleep! I lost it!

And so now, I’ve hit upon this one. Whatever. It works!

The photo is from a keynote in I did in London just over 2 years ago for Pladis, a global organization which includes Godiva Chocolates under its umbrella.

The slide on screen is appropriate – I’m talking about the speed of product and R&D innovation in our world today. Simply put, if you can’t keep up with your competitors and disruptors – if you can keep up the momentum – the implications are bigger than ever before.

Do you challenge yourself with respect to your innovation velocity? Your speed of ideas? Have you established an accelerated culture of creativity? In a world in which the future belongs to those who are fast, it matters!
