“Find your comfort in the joy!” – Futurist Jim Carroll
It’s the Christmas Party tonight! And it won’t be me, but the “kids” on stage!
The thing is, they aren’t kids. These are special needs young adults in the community where our ski chalet is found. And somehow, in the last 3 years, both my wife and I have become wonderfully involved; she far more as she sits on a very busy working Board of Directors.
3 years ago, @butler.cath, a great skiing and golfing friend, and the mother of a 25 year old special needs adult, told me of an initiative she had started, Events for Life, with the goal of providing regular day programs (and eventually more) for other individuals throughout the community.
I took on a little bit of effort to build a Web site and do some tech work in the background. Today, the organization provides the most wonderful of programs for a regular group of participants; the program is growing at a steady pace; and the community has a pathway for the future.
Tonight, I have the opportunity to share in the absolute joy that I will see in both the participants who will be in attendance, the parents, and the many community volunteers.
In a world in which hate rages and in which fear drives the religious right to abandon their more values and their soul, it is so wonderful to be able to participate in an initiative such as this!
It will be an evening, in which these wonderful young adults and the community around them can revel in the joy that comes from changing the world for the better!
I am honoured to be a part of it. And I think I have become a better person for what these young adults have taught me about what real success means.
