Jim Carroll's keynote connected transportation disruption directly to the leasing model for the Canadian Finance & Leasing Association in Montreal: self-driving vehicles, shared mobility, blockchain, changing ownership concepts and new technology inside the asset itself. The keynote, "If What You Lease Changes, The Lease Changes Too," laid out the challenge and the path forward. A leasing industry built around familiar assets and ownership assumptions had to adapt as the very nature of the asset, the user and the transaction changed. Six trends are shaping that shift. Autonomous Vehicles. Self-driving systems were challenging long-standing assumptions about vehicle use, risk, utilization and residual value. Shared Mobility. Ride sharing and access-based transportation were weakening the assumption that every user needed to own an asset. Blockchain. Distributed transaction technologies were creating new possibilities around identity, contracts, ownership and verification. Electrification. Electric drivetrains were changing asset economics, depreciation assumptions, service patterns and technology cycles. Ownership Redefined. The economic value of access, usage and service could become more important than traditional possession. Business Model Disruption. As the asset changed, finance products, customer relationships and revenue models had to change with it. The leasing model cannot stand still, Jim told the CFLA audience, when the asset, the user and the very concept of ownership are all moving. Do not study finance in isolation from the industries being financed, Jim told the Montreal audience. When the asset is reinvented, the economics and structure around it are reinvented too.
