Keynote: Magellan Health – Healthcare Care in the Era of Personalized, Connected, Predictive Medicine

This organization provides health care services to a vast range of health insurers – organizations such as Blue Cross and others. And the day before my keynote on disruptive trends in the healthcare industry, Amazon announced a healthcare initiative with  J.P. Morgan and Berkshire Hathaway.

What, Amazon again? Are you getting that there is a theme here? Definitely, which is why I now have a whole speaking topic dedicated to how to deal with Amazon. Do you?

Also, healthcare! Over the years, I’ve done a lot of keynotes on the future of healthcare. The Magellan folks saw me at an event, and decided I would be the idea person to kickoff the 2nd day of their event, with a talk that looked at the demographics, scientific, genomic, technological and other trends providing for massive disruption – and opportunity – in this sector.

The Story Behind the Quote

‘’ Well, this quote arrived in my head early this morning, because it perfectly fits my day! I’m in Jacksonville, FL, and in a few hours I will go on stage and speak to a bunch of senior executives for major health care insurers.

And the headline yesterday in the New York Times sums up their new reality: “Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Team Up to Try to Disrupt Health Care.” These are the very companies that will be impacted by the big, bold thinking underneath the headline. Clearly their world will be rocked by innovation coming from many new initiatives like this, and they will now have to work hard to ensure they have the agility to respond.

Yet here’s the thing: futurists like me have been talking for years that we would see disruption in every single aspect of the healthcare insurance industry, and I’ve been specifically talking for years about the potential for Amazon to do something fascinating in the sector.
And it now seems that we are on the edge of this reality. And so while no one is quite certain what this new initiative represents, one thing is clear: Change continues to come and its coming fast!’’

This photo is a mainstay of every keynote – its in a section where I compare the attitudes that Baby Boomers have towards change, driven by their early exposure to technology such as COBOL, BASIC, MSDOS and punch cards!
Kids have never seen that ugly side of tech, and I remain convinced are less encumbered by legacy.’’

Keynote: Independent Insurance Agents, Austin, Texas – The Disruption and Disintermediation of the Insurance Industry

It”s not just farmers who are faced with disruptive trends – everyone else is, particularly in the world of insurance.

This talk took a look at the key disruptive trends sweeping the world of property and casualty, as well as life insurance. The theme tied in to the same type of theme for the Purina dealers – when you business model is disrupted and some consumers are choosing to go ahead without you, you only survive by focusing on your role and the value of the unique services you provide to ensure that others don’t.

Amazon might one day get into the business of selling insurance – what happens then? That’s one of the challenging scenarios I presented from the stage.

‘’ It’s that George Jetson fellow again! He joins me on stage a lot, because it helps to emphasize a key point – the future is going to arrive faster than you think!

But this quote has nothing to do with George – it has to do with the ‘blame game.’ When I’m speaking to people about the future and trends, I note that far too many people and organizations blame others for the change, disruption, upheaval and other challenges that are underway.
My approach to the future is pretty simple. We have a pretty good idea of where things are headed. We can identify may of the actions we should take to get there and take advantage of the opportunities it presents and the challenges we will face. And from that, we can make a decision to do something – to actually follow and stay true to our tin plan.

In other words – think, identify, act, do. It’s not like its complicated!

There’s a little bit of this type insight I wrote into a blog post years ago: “Coping with Ketchup”, having to do with upside down ketchup bottles and change! It was actually a speech topic for a time – but I’ll leave that story for another day! ‘’
