“In extraordinary times, do extraordinary things!” -Futurist Jim Carroll
‘’ It’s PGA Merchandise Show Week! Two years ago, I was on stage at at this wonderful event as the opening keynote speaker, sandwiched on the agenda between Lee Trevino and Bubba Watson. Certainly a thrill, with a special moment being when I saw golfing son (who has a 1 handicap) sitting on the couch in the green room, with Lee and David Johannsen, talking golf.
My keynote focused on the fact that as a new generation comes into our world, there are big opportunities to innovate to bring them into the game. With social networks, mobile devices, GPS technologies and the many other tools which are a part of their life dominating their attention, the world of golf should align itself to these trends to build interest in the game. Webcam’s on par 3’s for hole-in-1’s, TopGolf as a pathway to the game, and mom’s Instagramming photos of their kids at golf camp : these are the methods that should be embraced, not shunned.
This thought came into my mind this morning: we live in extraordinary times, with so many trends coming together all at once, that the only choice is to be ‘bold’ - be extraordinary. Maybe that’s the mindset that the PGA Pro and others today need to adopt to continue to try to grow the game!
There are a lot of video clips from the event scattered throughout my site, and later this week I’ll put together a short heater!
