Jim Carroll's keynote challenged truck dealers at the 2020 ATD Show in Las Vegas to look beyond the traditional vehicle, as connectivity, electrification, autonomy and service-based economics began redefining the truck, the dealership and the meaning of uptime. The keynote, "The Truck Became A Data Platform On Wheels," laid out the challenge and the path forward. Dealers were facing a future in which the technology inside the truck could change faster than the traditional sales and service model built around it. Six trends are shaping that shift. Connected Fleets. Trucks were becoming rolling data platforms, generating insight far beyond the engine and the odometer. Electrification. Electric powertrains were moving from pilot programs toward mainstream fleet consideration. Autonomy. Autonomous and driver-assist technologies were reshaping long-haul economics and safety. Service-Based Economics. Revenue was shifting from one-time sales toward ongoing uptime and service relationships. HyperConnectivity. Constant data flow between trucks, dealers and fleets was becoming the new baseline. Maximizing Uptime. Uptime itself was becoming the product dealers were really selling. The future is not simply selling trucks, Jim told the ATD Show audience. It is helping customers operate connected fleets with more uptime, more intelligence and more certainty. There's a moment in every ATD Show conversation where a dealer principal realizes their business model is quietly becoming a technology business. Jim's job on that stage was to make that realization arrive a little sooner, and a little less painfully. Explore more keynote case studies.
