HP Mexico brought customers of key client companies to Miami for a CIO Summit. The overall agenda was to provide them with the insight to launch into a future of disruptive opportunity. My keynote, “Think Big, Start Small, Scale Fast”, took them on a tour of the major global, technological and business model trends that demand a culture of agility and a leadership aligned to fast paced opportunistic change!

Over the years, I’ve been invited in to speak to the HR departments of many organizations. In this case, Honeywell invited me in to open a get-together of their key HR leadership team from around the world – a few hundred individuals in all. My perspective is that our ability to access the right skills at the right time for the right purpose will increasingly define future success, and that is one of many issues I put on the stage in my opening keynote.
The acceleration of medical science, new diagnostic technology, advanced medical procedures, and bionic/3d printed limb replacement – the future of veterinary care is fast. Not to mention the impact of faster consumer behavioural change driven by new social media influencers, the disruption being caused by Amazon and other factors — this is no longer your grandfathers world of pet-care. Patterson, one of the largest vet firms in North America, invited me in to talk to several hundred animal care processionals and sales executives on the trends that will define the future of their industry.
My son and I in front of one of Volvo’s newest trucks. “The typical truck now generates 3 gigabytes of diagnostic and other information every month!”[/caption] It was quite a thrill to be the opening speaker a short while ago for the annual Dealers Meeting of Volvo/Mack Trucks North America, in Dallas, Texas. My role was to talk about the future of transportation and trucking, and put in perspective how the reality today and going forward that for trucks, connectivity is the new horsepower! My talk focused around several broad themes; the evolution of trucks into a world of predictive diagnostic maintenance; data-driven hyper-connectivity that leads us into future efficiencies and opportunities; the increasing skills challenge that comes with the shift; and the opportunity that this presents to dealers as we move into an era of sophisticated, post-sale, connected service and support. That was a mouthful! Going in, I already knew I’d be speaking in the exact same conference room where a few years ago, I was the opening keynote speaker for the Texas Municipal League. In the audience at time I had more than 2,500 mayors and other elected officials of cities and towns large and small from throughout the state of Texas. And it’s just a few days after President Obama swept to his second term in office – and so I needed to move these folks into thinking about the opportunities of the future! Here’s a clip from that talk, in which I was speaking how quickly the intelligent infrastructure of the 21st — including intelligent highway technology — was becoming a big part of our world.

You ever see those massive overhead cranes at container piers and shipping locations? That’s Kone! They brought me in for a keynote for a key customer event that took at global supply chain and logistics issues, and the impact that might have on the future flow of products from around the world. Robotics, autonomous vehicles, same day shipping, end of runway manufacturing, 3D printing – there is no shortage of trends that might disrupt this world.
The energy and construction industry is being massively transformed by connectivity and the Internet of things. It changes how we design, what we design, and the architectural concepts that guide our design. With that in mind, GE, one of the global leaders in the lighting industry, engaged me to headline a major event in New York City that took a look at the future in terms of the ideas and concepts above.
