# Keynote Case Study: GE Lighting — Buildings Were Becoming Smart, Connected Systems
By

## Article Content
GE Lighting brought me in to examine the future of smart construction, design and methodology. Lighting was no longer simply about illumination. Buildings were becoming more connected. More sensor-rich. More data-aware. And increasingly designed around intelligent infrastructure. That meant lighting could become part of a larger operating system for the building. Six themes framed the discussion: Connected Buildings. Building systems were becoming increasingly networked. Smart Lighting. Lighting infrastructure was gaining intelligence and control. Sensors. Physical spaces were becoming more aware of occupancy and usage. Energy Efficiency. Data and control were creating new opportunities to manage energy. Design Transformation. Technology was changing how buildings were planned and operated. Intelligent Infrastructure. Buildings were becoming integrated systems rather than collections of separate components. The building of the future would not simply be constructed. It would be instrumented. Connected. And continuously managed. Buildings were becoming smart, connected systems — and lighting was becoming part of their intelligence layer.
