# From the Stage: The Jobs of 2036

At the IIA/ISACA GRC Conference in August 2026, I did something a little unusual. I invented a conference agenda for 2036 — complete with fictional sessions and speakers — and used it to ask a serious question: What jobs become necessary when the systems we’re supposed to audit can act, decide, adapt and sometimes govern themselves? The clip below is that section of the keynote. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ptwe93TPL2U Nine roles. Each one rooted in a force of change already visible today: autonomous authority, self-modifying controls, synthetic evidence, machine-readable regulation, physical AI operating in the real world. Some of these titles will exist by 2036. Others will be distributed across teams, combined, or carried out jointly by people and machines. What matters isn’t whether the names prove accurate. It’s whether organizations are preparing for the responsibilities behind them. That’s the larger argument. In 2016, the profession was talking about audit at the speed of risk. By 2026, the challenge had become governance at the speed of risk. Looking ahead: governance at the speed of machines. The full post — with all nine roles examined in detail — is here.
