“The greatest competitive advantage isn’t knowing everything – it’s knowing how to learn anything.” - Futurist Jim Carroll One year ago, in July 2025, I published Megatrend #22: Cross-Disciplinary Specialists as part of my 30 Megatrends series. Time to grade myself. Here's how I set it up back then: The highest career value is increasingly found at the intersection of previously distinct careers, knowledge, and skill sets. Hybrid expertise that combines technical, creative, and human skills will continue to command a significant premium in the talent marketplace. The future is hybrid! You don't need to know much anymore - you just need to know how to know it! Not only that, but you need to know how to know many different things. "T-shaped talent" caught the shape of what's happening but skipped the names. A year on, the specific hybrid titles I called are showing up in job postings with real money behind them. In finance, AI-governance hiring is up 150% year over year with more than 14,000 open LinkedIn roles — largely AI compliance officer and AI risk manager positions, the exact hybrids I named, driven by the EU AI Act's high-risk rules taking full effect this August with fines up to 7% of global turnover. Average pay runs $99,000 to $120,000, top quartile above $160,000. In healthcare, demand for healthcare data scientists — the clinical-fluency-plus-statistics hybrid — now outstrips the supply of people who have both halves, with data scientist employment overall projected up 34% through 2034 and healthcare analytics roles specifically up 15%. Employers are explicit they want people who blend machine-learning skill with real clinical workflow knowledge, not one or the other. Manufacturing followed the same script: global manufacturers now hire AI engineers alongside mechanical engineers as standard practice, not a specialty add-on, with AI systems architect pay averaging over $224,000. Verdict: Nailed it, and the named titles are the ones actually on the job boards. "T-shaped talent" was the right label; AI compliance officer, healthcare data scientist, and AI systems architect are the paychecks proving it.
