What if you could make the mistake before you actually made it? That's increasingly possible. I call the mindset behind it Digital Twin Thinking. A digital twin is a virtual representation of something in the real world: a factory, building, grid, machine, supply chain, city or process. But the bigger business idea isn't the technology itself. It's the ability to simulate before you commit. Test the factory before you build it. Stress the supply chain before it breaks. Model energy demand before capacity disappears. Test a process change before disrupting production. Run the scenario before the crisis arrives. That's a profound shift in how decisions get made. For most of history, organizations learned by doing. Increasingly, we can learn by simulating. Three implications: Failure gets cheaper. Finding a problem in a model costs far less than discovering it after deployment.Scenario planning becomes operational. "What if?" moves from a meeting-room question to something we can actually test.Decision quality compounds. Every simulation creates knowledge that can improve the next decision. And this won't remain confined to engineering. AI will make increasingly sophisticated simulation available to strategy, healthcare, infrastructure, workforce planning, logistics and many other fields.
