# Jimism #010: Think Big, Start Small, Scale Fast

I've used this phrase for years because it captures one of the biggest mistakes organizations make with innovation. They confuse ambition with implementation. Think Big. Start Small. Scale Fast. Thinking big matters. Without ambition, organizations simply optimize yesterday. But big ideas often die when companies try to make the first step as large as the ultimate vision. The budget gets huge. The committee gets bigger. The risks multiply. The project slows down. Eventually the big idea becomes a very expensive PowerPoint deck. There's a better way. Think Big. Start with a meaningful vision of where the opportunity could eventually take you. Start Small. Test one assumption. Run one pilot. Solve one problem. Learn cheaply. Scale Fast. When the evidence says it works, don't leave the idea trapped forever in pilot mode. Three disciplines matter: Separate the vision from the first step. The destination can be enormous while the experiment remains small.Design the pilot to answer a question. A pilot without a learning objective is just activity.Know the scaling trigger in advance. Decide what evidence will cause you to move. Innovation doesn't require betting the company every time you try something new. It requires learning faster than everyone else. Big vision. Small experiment. Rapid learning. Fast scale. Think Big. Start Small. Scale Fast. jimisms.jimcarroll.com
