# Keynote Case Study: Colorado Department of Transportation — Transportation Infrastructure Was Becoming Intelligent
By

## Article Content
The Colorado Department of Transportation brought me in to examine the future of transportation infrastructure. Roads have traditionally been treated as fixed physical assets. But technology was beginning to change that assumption. Vehicles were becoming smarter. Connectivity was improving. Autonomous systems were developing. And the infrastructure around transportation was beginning to gain intelligence of its own. Six themes framed the discussion: Autonomous Vehicles. Self-driving technologies were creating new long-term infrastructure questions. Smart Roads. Transportation infrastructure was gaining greater digital capability. Connected Vehicles. Vehicles were increasingly able to communicate with systems around them. Data-Driven Transportation. Real-time information was becoming more important to traffic management and planning. Economic Development. Transportation technology increasingly influenced regional competitiveness. Long-Term Infrastructure Planning. Public infrastructure needed to anticipate technologies that could mature over decades. Transportation planners face a unique problem. They build assets intended to last for decades while the technology using those assets can change in years. Transportation infrastructure was becoming intelligent — and long-term planning had to account for a rapidly changing mobility future.
