# Keynote Case Study: Toshiba — Mobile Technology Was Rewriting Business Models
By

## Article Content
Toshiba Australia invited me to open its annual technology conference in Sydney. The focus was mobile technology and business disruption. In 2008, the smartphone era was still young. But the direction was already clear. Computing was becoming more portable. Connectivity was becoming more continuous. Information was becoming available everywhere. And mobile technology was beginning to change how people worked, communicated and interacted with organizations. Six themes framed the discussion: Mobile Computing. Computing power was moving out of fixed locations and into everyday life. Always-On Connectivity. People were becoming continuously connected to information and services. Workplace Mobility. Work was becoming less dependent on a traditional office. Changing Customer Behavior. Mobile access was beginning to alter service and communication expectations. New Business Models. Mobility was enabling entirely new ways to deliver products and services. Adaptability. Established organizations needed to respond quickly to technologies changing customer behavior. The broader lesson was one I would later carry into countless industries: New technology matters most when it changes behavior. Mobile technology was rewriting business models because it was rewriting how people lived and worked.
