Here's the line I open with in this sector, because it still catches rooms off guard: the branch was never the point. The future of finance is code. Finance is moving from branch-and-vault to mobile, embedded, API-driven, AI-enabled and real-time — and the institutions that win are the ones learning to think like technology companies, not the ones with the nicest lobby. AI and cognitive finance are moving automation out of the back office and into decision support and increasingly autonomous workflows. Fintech keeps winning the same way it always has — not by out-resourcing incumbents, but by solving one customer problem with obsessive focus. Open banking and APIs are turning finance into a platform other companies build on top of, whether the incumbent banks like it or not. Everybody becomes a bank. Embedded finance is dissolving the category line — payments are disappearing into phones, apps, vehicles and commerce flows so completely that "cashless" undersells what's actually happening. Wealth management isn't exempt either: robo-advice, transparency demands and the largest generational wealth transfer in history are reshaping what "advice" even means. And all of this is happening while risk accelerates in the opposite direction — AI-enabled fraud, cyber risk and the early edge of quantum computing are challenging controls that were built for a much slower world. That's the governance question I push hardest in this room: can your decision latency keep up with a system now operating at machine speed?
