“When capital flows as freely as ideas, the boundaries of innovation dissolve, unleashing a new era of discovery!” - Futurist Jim Carroll One year ago, in August 2025, I published Megatrend #26: The Great R&D Capital Reallocation as part of my 30 Megatrends series. Time to grade myself. Here's what I wrote at the time: Corporate research labs and government agencies used to be the core of most global R&D. Think Velcro and NASA. DuPont and Kevlar. Xerox PARC and the graphical user interface. Bell Labs and the transistor. These institutions were once the engines of breakthrough innovation, but that's no longer the case. We are now in the midst of a historic shift in innovation finance, as capital moves from traditional corporate labs and venture capital firms to a diverse global ecosystem of crowdfunding platforms, sovereign wealth funds, and decentralized funding models. Q1 2026 global VC funding hit a record $297 billion — up 150% year over year. AI alone captured 81% of all of it, up from 55% a year earlier. OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Waymo together raised $188 billion — nearly two-thirds of the entire quarter. 35–45% of that AI venture funding is flowing straight into physical infrastructure: data centers, labs, manufacturing capacity. Non-AI startups are left competing for what's left — about 20% of the total. Verdict: Understated it. This isn't reallocation — it's concentration. Capital didn't just flow toward ideas. It flowed almost entirely toward one idea.
