“The future isn’t online or in-store; it’s a personalized, phygital experience where every interaction builds a lasting connection.” - Futurist Jim Carroll One year ago, in July 2025, I published Megatrend #20: Physical-Digital Retail Integration as part of my 30 Megatrends series. Time to grade myself. Here's what I wrote at the time: Retail and commercial spaces are being fundamentally reimagined, not eliminated. They are being transformed into experience centres rather than transactional environments. The role of physical space in customer journeys is being completely redefined. The result is a global retail landscape undergoing an irreversible paradigm shift from a purely transactional model towards one centered on experience. This transformation is driven by the strategic integration of physical and digital worlds - "phygital" retail. "Phygital" going mainstream was the headline; the infrastructure underneath is the real story. Start with the "intelligent core" — AI personalization is no longer a pilot. 89% of retail and CPG companies are now using or testing AI, active deployment jumped 16 points to 58% this year, and 92% of businesses use AI-driven personalization to power recommendations and product pages, with revenue lifts running 10 to 40% where it's done well. Smart mirrors, the specific example I called out, turned into an actual category — running $3 to $5 billion this year depending on whose forecast you trust, growing around 8% annually, with virtual try-on now standard at flagship stores rather than a novelty install. The "connected environment" pillar — RFID, smart shelves, frictionless checkout — is the one that moved fastest and gets discussed least. RFID self-checkout shipments rose 18% in the first half of 2026 alone, nearly triple the growth rate of plain barcode self-checkout. Tag costs have fallen by two-thirds since 2021, Oracle, NCR, and Diebold Nixdorf now ship native RFID integrations, and Walmart, Target, and Kroger are running real store rollouts, not lab demos. Verdict: Nailed it, and undersold the plumbing. The AR conversion stat was the flashy part; the RFID tag that got ten times cheaper is what's actually rewiring the store.
