Megatrends One Year Later – #5: Knowledge Acceleration – What I Predicted, and What’s Actually Happening

One year ago, in June 2025, I published Megatrend #5: Knowledge Acceleration as part of my 30 Megatrends series.

Here’s part of what I wrote.

So what’s the trend all about? It’s quite simple – the world is experiencing an unprecedented acceleration in the creation and obsolescence of knowledge, even faster than what I suggested in 2023, largely driven by advancements in AI and the Internet of Things (IoT). This rapid pace presents a dual challenge for organizations: adapting to the quick decay of existing expertise while preparing for entirely new skill sets and job roles. Interestingly, AI, while a primary driver of this acceleration, also serves as a powerful tool for managing it through advanced knowledge discovery, personalized learning, and augmented human capabilities.

So where do things stand? It’s said that the half-life of a professional skill has collapsed from 10–15 years back in the 1980s to 2.5–5 years today. 53% of organizations now say critical skills in their industry become obsolete within three years — 15% say within one. Whoah!

But just wait: Gartner is now predicting that by 2030, adaptability and learning velocity will replace technical skill as the primary hiring metric. That’s not a futurist’s prediction anymore. That’s an HR department’s roadmap.

Verdict: Confirmed — and it’s getting more urgent, not less. “Knowing how to know it” just became the actual job description.
