Megatrends One Year Later – #2: Ambient Intelligence – What I Predicted, and What’s Actually Happening

One year ago, in June 2025, I published Megatrend #2: Ambient Intelligence as part of my 30 Megatrends series.

Here’s what I wrote:

Computing is no longer confined to screens and devices-it’s vanishing into our physical world. Smart sensors embedded in walls adjust lighting based on your mood, while Al-powered fabrics in clothing monitor health metrics without your awareness. Voice assistants anticipate needs without being summoned, and autonomous vehicles make thousands of decisions invisibly.

Time to grade myself. Bang on with the prediction, but not the timing. CES 2026’s big theme, according to Forbes: “AI’s next interface is you.” That’s not a headline I wrote — it’s a headline that proved my point for me.

Wearables in 2026 have matured past step counters into body-adjacent AI systems — watches, rings, glasses, hearables — fusing motion, spatial audio, air quality, and biometrics through a single on-device neural network. The best ones aren’t phone replacements. They’re ambient companion layers.

Computing didn’t just get smaller. It got quieter.

Exactly the architecture I described.

Verdict: On track, and accelerating. The tech is disappearing into the fabric of daily life faster than most people have noticed — which was always the point.
