The fundamental rhythm of economic change has quickened to a pace that invalidates long-held strategic assumptions. Products used to last months, years, and even decades before they were obsolete - today, it might be mere months or even days. Is the innovation cycle still compressing a year later? If anything it sped up. AI-native companies are now shipping product cycles roughly 10 times faster than traditional enterprises. Semiconductor product lifecycles have compressed from over ten years historically to 4.7 years for consumer-grade parts and 6.2 for industrial-grade. Data center hardware refresh cycles have gone from 5-7 years down to 18-36 months. Generative design and 3D printing did their part too. AI-driven generative design is now routinely producing parts 30-70% lighter than solid equivalents, while manufacturing itself got faster underneath it — resin printers run 25 to 100 times faster than older methods, and multi-laser metal printers are cutting throughput times by 200-400% using up to 12 lasers in parallel. Prototyping-to-production, once measured in months, is now days in the shops that adopted it. And open-source is the clearest proof the "transient advantage" thesis was right. What used to be occasional research drops is now a release cadence — nine notable open-weight model launches in a single 12-day stretch this summer, from labs on three continents, some already rivaling closed frontier models within single digits on benchmarks. Models are shipping like software patches now, not research papers. Verdict: Nailed it — compressing faster than I described. "Continuous reinvention" used to sound aggressive. Now it's the minimum bar just to stay in the conversation.
