Jim Carroll's keynote challenged energy executives and downstream operators at the 2019 DTN Energy Summit in Omaha to confront the momentum behind renewables, electric vehicles, microgrids and battery storage. The keynote, "The Downstream Future Would Not Run On Yesterday's Fuel," laid out the challenge and the path forward. Gas-station and transportation-energy businesses sat directly in the path of a profound shift in how energy was produced, stored and consumed. Six trends are shaping that shift. Renewable Energy. Solar and wind momentum was broadening the energy mix and changing long-term assumptions about supply. Electric Vehicles. EV adoption was shifting part of transportation demand from liquid fuel toward electricity. Battery Storage. Storage was making variable generation more useful and changing the economics of energy systems. Microgrids. Distributed generation and local energy systems were creating new patterns of production and resilience. Transportation Shift. Mobility technologies were changing where, when and how transportation energy was consumed. Downstream Reinvention. Fuel retailers and suppliers faced a future in which the forecourt, customer and revenue model all evolved. The energy transition does not just change supply, Jim told the Omaha audience. It changes transportation, retail and the entire downstream business model. The energy transition changes the fuel mix, the customer, the infrastructure and the business model, Jim's message went — all at the same time, which is exactly why downstream operators couldn't afford to treat it as someone else's problem.
