# Keynote Case Study: Royal Caribbean — The Travel Experience Was Entering the Era of Acceleration

Royal Caribbean brought together its senior leaders from around the world for a global leadership meeting and asked me to challenge them with a view of what was coming next. My keynote was built around “25 Trends for 2025.” The timing mattered. Travel and tourism were already being reshaped by technology, changing consumer expectations, new business models and accelerating innovation. And one of the most important realities was that many of the things that once seemed like science fiction were rapidly becoming ordinary. That is why I opened with one of my favorite themes: The Jetsons have arrived. What once looked futuristic — smart devices, intelligent systems, constant connectivity, virtual experiences and machine intelligence — was quickly becoming part of everyday life. For a company built around creating extraordinary experiences, that matters enormously. Consumers do not compare a cruise experience only with another cruise line. They compare it with every great experience they have anywhere. That means the bar keeps moving. The keynote explored the broader acceleration shaping the future of business and the implications for travel. Every company was becoming a software company. R&D was becoming more collaborative and distributed. Attention spans were collapsing. Customer expectations were accelerating. Cash and payment systems were changing. Supply chains were becoming smarter and more connected. Skills requirements were shifting. Sustainability and energy systems were being reinvented. The important point was not that every trend would affect Royal Caribbean in exactly the same way. It was that multiple trends were converging at the same time. That convergence creates both complexity and opportunity. Six themes were especially relevant: The Experience Economy Accelerates. Guests increasingly expect personalized, seamless and memorable experiences from the moment they begin planning a trip. Every Company Becomes a Software Company. Digital platforms increasingly shape booking, service, operations, onboard experience and customer relationships. Customer Expectations Rise Continuously. The best digital experiences anywhere become the benchmark for hospitality everywhere. Cashless and Frictionless Commerce. Payments, identity and service interactions move toward simpler, faster and increasingly invisible systems. Connected Operations and Supply Chains. Data, sensors and intelligent systems improve how complex global operations are coordinated. Sustainability Becomes Strategic. Energy, materials, waste and environmental expectations increasingly influence both operations and brand value. The keynote was not about predicting one specific technology. It was about understanding acceleration itself. The future rarely arrives as one dramatic event. It arrives through hundreds of technologies, expectations and business models changing together. For a global hospitality organization, the leadership challenge is to continually ask: What are guests beginning to expect? What technologies are becoming ordinary? What friction can disappear? What new experience becomes possible? And what assumption about our business should we challenge next? Royal Caribbean has always been in the experience business. The future simply raises the stakes. In an era of acceleration, the companies that create the most memorable future are the ones that understand how quickly the definition of a great experience is changing.
