Jim Carroll delivered the keynote address at the Retail Value Chain Federation (RVCF) 2013 Annual Fall Conference, held November 3–6 at the Westin Kierland in Scottsdale, Arizona. The RVCF represents some of the largest names in North American retail, including Walmart, Costco, Neiman Marcus, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Saks Fifth Avenue, along with their supplier and logistics partners. Carroll’s keynote, themed around the message that “the future belongs to those who are fast,” challenged retailers and their value chain partners to recognize that the pace of business model change in retail had permanently accelerated — and that the gap between fast innovators and slow incumbents was widening at an unprecedented rate. The talk explored the rapid emergence of same-day delivery, the collapse of traditional retail boundaries, and the technologies enabling entirely new forms of customer interaction that would reshape every link in the retail value chain.
