## Article Content
Jim Carroll delivered the opening keynote address to approximately 200 senior executives at a Noble Energy leadership meeting in Houston, Texas in May 2012, exploring the technological forces transforming the global energy sector. Noble Energy was at the time one of the most active independent oil and natural gas exploration and production companies in the United States, with significant operations in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, the DJ Basin, and internationally in the Eastern Mediterranean and West Africa. Carroll’s talk challenged the executive team to look beyond near-term commodity cycles and engage with the structural transformation underway in energy: the rapid cost decline of renewables, the emergence of distributed generation, and the digital technologies — from advanced seismic imaging to real-time reservoir management — that were changing the economics of exploration and production. The post-keynote blog post Carroll published on energy innovation, including exotic research on stopping light with photons and other emerging physics breakthroughs, reflected the breadth and depth of his preparation for energy sector audiences.
