# Keynote Case Study: Visa — Payments Were Moving at Digital Speed

## Article Content
Long before today's digital-wallet economy became mainstream, the payments industry was already confronting a fundamental acceleration. That was the context for my keynote for Visa in 2008. E-commerce was growing. Consumers were becoming more comfortable transacting online. Mobile technology was beginning to change the relationship between people and information. And the infrastructure of commerce was steadily moving away from purely physical transactions toward a much faster digital environment. The key issue was velocity. Digital commerce collapses distance. It reduces transaction time. It changes expectations. And it creates new pressure on the organizations that make payments possible. Six themes framed the discussion: E-Commerce Growth. More economic activity was moving online. Digital Payments. Electronic transaction systems were becoming more central to everyday commerce. Mobile Acceleration. Mobile devices were beginning to reshape how consumers accessed information and services. Consumer Expectations. Convenience and speed were becoming increasingly important to the transaction experience. Global Connectivity. Digital commerce was reducing traditional geographic boundaries. Transaction Velocity. The payments ecosystem was being forced to operate at increasingly digital speed. The significance of these trends was larger than the transaction itself. Payments sit inside almost every business model. When the payment experience changes, commerce changes with it. New channels become possible. New customer behavior emerges. New expectations become permanent. The future of payments would ultimately become inseparable from the future of digital commerce. Payments were moving at digital speed — and the organizations enabling them had to move just as fast.
