Let’s face it – attention spans are disappearing! It’s said that the typical shopper scans some 12 feet of shelf space per second while in a store!
And attention spans in the conference or meeting room are also challenged — with people turning to their Blackberries, iPhones and other smart phones to tweet, email, converse or surf….`
An effective keynote speaker knows how to work with the new audience. Jim Carroll is particularly effective at doing so … through the use of an online, instant text message polling service. He often incorporates 4 or 5 interactive polls throughout his talk to get instant audience insight and interaction.
And there’s no special equipment required! He uses his Web browser to pull up a poll — and people text their answers in. The results appear on the screen INSTANTLY. Here is a great example from a recent keynote on stage for Godiva Chocolates global leadership meeting in London, England.
While Jim often finds himself on stage in front of upwards of 5,000 people in Las Vegas, he recently found himself on stage in front of 250 high school students at his sons school. Watch what happens when they are told to turn their cell phones ON DURING CLASS!
Read more about that experience here: “What happens when high school students are told to text!”
These quick polls, incorporated into a keynote on stage, whether with a group of 300 or 3,000 people, provide for a huge degree of interactivity with the audience, and provide for some really exciting dynamics on stage.
