It’s all around your home.” - Futurist Jim Carroll One year ago, in July 2025, I published Megatrend #7: Energy Decentralization as part of my 30 Megatrends series. Part of what I wrote: For decades, our model has been simple: massive, centralized power stations push electricity in one direction to passive consumers. That era is decisively ending. We are witnessing a fundamental shift from a one-way delivery monologue to a multi-directional energy dialogue. The power plant of the future is no longer a distant smokestack; it’s the solar panels on your roof, the battery in your garage, and the smart devices throughout your home. This evolution toward intelligent, multi-directional networks represents a critical inflection point over the next five years. It’s a transition creating enormous business opportunities that extend far beyond simple hardware to encompass sophisticated, data-driven services.  Essentially, it’s being a centralized grid, to a decentralized, distributed grid, with millions of energy inputs. So is the home really becoming a power plant? Yes — and 2026 backs it up. Solar and storage now make up 79% of all newly planned US generation capacity, and California just let aggregated home batteries and EVs count as grid resource-adequacy capacity — a policy admission that the "prosumer" is now infrastructure. Virtual power plants, already a multi-billion-dollar market compounding above 20% a year, are the software stitching thousands of those batteries into one dispatchable resource. Microgrids are the other half of decentralization, and they've stopped being just backup generators. That market hit roughly $24 billion in 2026, on pace for $55 billion by 2031, powered by grid-forming inverters that let hospitals, data centers, military bases and campuses run in "island mode" with renewables above 90% penetration. That's the resilience case I made, now a regulated utility line item, not a disaster-prep footnote. Digitalization is the slower leg of the Three Ds. The global smart-meter base has passed 1.8 billion units, but rollouts still crawl in places — Germany was only about 20% done by early 2026 against a 2030 mandate. And the IEA's warning landed on schedule: annual grid investment needs to rise roughly 50% from today's $400 billion by 2030, with over 2,500 gigawatts of renewable and storage projects stuck in interconnection queues worldwide. Verdict: Nailed it on the direction — the grid bottleneck arrived right when I warned it would. Generation, storage and resilience are all ahead of my timeline. The prosumer showed up faster than the wires built to trade with them.
