# Megatrends One Year Later – #3: Human Technology Integration – What I Predicted, and What&#8217;s Actually Happening

“When technology and human biology merge, the boundaries of what medicine can achieve completely dissolve.” - Futurist Jim Carroll One year ago, in June 2025, I published Megatrend #3: Human Technology Integration as part of my 30 Megatrends series. Here's part of what I wrote: The boundary between technology and biology is blurring with neural interfaces, bio-monitoring, augmentation technologies, and medical device connectivity which we can refer to as bio-connectivity. It creates a new form of hyperconnected medicine, leading to entirely new categories of products, and services, not to mention ethical considerations. I also wrote this: Here’s where this trend takes us, in a slide from deck last week: “The future of health isn’t just in our hands; it’s on our wrists, around our hearts, and guiding every decision. Smart, connected devices are writing a new chapter where every patient is empowered, and care is truly continuous.” The post was based on my many, many years of speaking about this trend, but also pulled in slides from a recent keynote for a medical device company just a few weeks before. So where do things stand today? Broader than I gave it credit for in the first draft of this post — the bigger story isn't brain implants, it's the parts of bio-connectivity already in everyone's pocket and every hospital room. Wearable medical devices are now a $68.1 billion market in 2026, on pace for $330.5 billion by 2033 — blowing past the $37.4 billion I projected for 2028, two years ahead of my own schedule. Smartwatch penetration among adults has hit 46%; wearable adoption among patients over 50 has climbed to 34%. The Internet of Medical Things side is scaling just as fast: smart hospitals are projected to deploy 7.4 million connected devices in 2026, up 131% from 2021, with connected medical devices alone accounting for roughly $63.7 billion of that market. And the cost-management case I made in the original post is now measured too — wearables could cut hospital costs by up to 16% over five years, and remote patient monitoring could save the health system $200 billion over 25. Connected drug delivery moved from slide to shelf: Medtronic got FDA clearance in January for its MiniMed Go app, pairing a smart insulin pen with a continuous glucose sensor; Insulet launched an automated insulin delivery system in the Middle East in February. That's the exact "monitors in real-time, delivers insulin automatically" scenario from my original slide — now shipping product, not a slide. And yes, the neural-interface sliver of this trend is moving too: Neuralink expanded its trial to more than a dozen participants, and China approved the first commercial BCI device in March. But that's the smallest, slowest-moving piece of a much bigger picture — no BCI is commercially available in the US yet, still research protocol only. Verdict: Nailed it — and undersold the wearables and IoMT side specifically. Brain implants make the headlines. Wrists, hospital beds, and insulin pumps are where bio-connectivity actually already lives.
