Time to grade myself. Here's how I set it up back then: We are experiencing unprecedented innovation in physical materials, everything from self-healing surfaces to programmable matter. These new substances enable product capabilities that were previously impossible. Virtually every single industry, new product discovery, and invention is the result of materials science. No doubt, material science is a megatrend! Where are the self-healing materials a year later? Construction moved fastest. Bacterial "bio-concrete" — organisms like Bacillus subtilis and Sporosarcina Pasteurii secreting calcium carbonate into cracks — is now called 2026's leading construction material trend, sealing micro-cracks in as little as 21 days and pitched specifically to cut the Middle East's infrastructure repair bill. Induction-healed asphalt, with steel fiber woven into the mix and reopened by a mobile heating pass, now adds 5-15 years of pavement life and cuts maintenance spend up to 50%. Automotive is real but slower than the pitch. Self-healing coatings have a genuine patent landscape now — 25+ filers across the US, Europe, India, and South Korea — but mapped mostly onto scratch-repair paint, not Lamborghini-style microvascular chassis. Self-healing tires are still overpromised: what ships is "self-sealing," true self-healing rubber remains lab-only, expected to carry a 30% price premium once it lands. Healthcare is where "think" came closest to true. An Illinois team built a self-healing PVA/gelatin hydrogel paired with exosome-coated oxygen nanobubbles to fix wound hypoxia directly, and a self-gelling antibacterial powder for infected battlefield burns went from concept to functioning product this year. Programmable matter, by contrast, stayed speculative — claytronics and shape-shifting "catoms" remain impressive demos, with energy delivery at micron scale still the unsolved problem. Verdict: Largely right, unevenly paced. Concrete, asphalt, and wound care are shipping working self-healing products today; automotive coatings and tires are commercializing slower than promised; programmable matter is exactly as far off as the skeptics said. The materials that heal are real. The materials that reshape themselves are still science fiction.
