*Futurist Jim Carroll is writing a series, The Art of the Infinite Pivot, based on 36 lessons from his 36 years as a solo entrepreneur, working as a nomadic worker in the global freelance economy. The series is unfolding here, and at *[*pivot.jimcarroll.com*](https://pivot.jimcarroll.com/)*.*

Here's the most important thing you need to know about the future.

You'll never be ready for it, but you always need to keep doing what you need to do to pivot towards it.

Your pivot - of your career, business, knowledge, skills, and more - will be a never-ending project. Because there is no finish line.

That's the lesson I wish I could go back and tell my 24-year-old self, the day I walked out of a steady corporate job in 1990 to chase a future that didn't yet exist.

I thought, back then, that I was making one big career change. One leap. One pivot, after which life would settle into a new normal.

It didn't.

There is never a new normal. Every few years, the ground moved again. The Internet showed up. The dot-com crash happened. The 2008 recession arrived. The pandemic. Now AI.

Each time, the work shifted. Each time, I had to learn something new, drop something old, reinvent again.

The first pivot was not the last. It was just the first one I noticed.

That is the thing about pivots. They don't end. They just keep coming.

So if you have read this series with attention, here is what I hope you take away: .you don't need a plan for the future. You don't need certainty. You don't need to know exactly where you are going.

*You need a way of thinking about change that holds up when change arrives.*

That's what I have tried to give you in these 36 posts. A way of looking at the world that helps you act when the moment to pivot comes or gets closer.

There is no finish line. There never was. The pivots are not the path to some final destination. *The pivots are the destination*. The voyage is the point.

I'm still on the voyage. I'm pivoting right now, today, in 2026: into AI, into a new book, into a new chapter of how I work and write.

You will be too.

Keep pivoting!

For what it is worth, this is the original list of 35 lessons I wrote in the summer of 2025 that went into my 'drafts' folder, suddenly rediscovered in February. This was the original structure for this series, which evolved along the way - I pivoted! It's still a great list!
**35 Personal Lessons: Pivoting Toward a Meaningful Life**

 	- **The Greatest ROI is Time:** You will never look back and regret the hours you invested in your family instead of the greater career success you might have had.

 	- **Childhood is Fleeting:** The years are long, but the days of them needing you are brief—never miss a chance to simply be present.

 	- **The Juggling is the Journey:** The act of juggling work, career, and family isn't about achieving perfect balance; it's about accepting and loving the beautiful, creative chaos of a full life.

 	- **Embrace the Interruption:** A child interrupting a crucial call often leads to a more human and honest connection with the person on the other end.

 	- **Reframe Your Office:** The best office is the one where you can hear your children or loved ones laughing from the next room - or right in the office! Don't hide from it - embrace it!

 	- **The Antidote to Inertia:** Never let the safe inertia of a secure job compress your imagination; the wild risk of chasing your deepest passion is always the worthier investment.

 	- **The Power of Partnership:** Your biggest, boldest career dreams are only sustainable when rooted in a strong, loving partnership that manages the chaos behind the scenes. That would be my wife and office partner! (She's worked with me in the home office for 30 of those 35 years)

 	- **The Most Important Client:** Your most vital client, the one who deserves your attention most, is always the one who calls you "Dad" or "Mom".

 	- **Build to Flex:** Design a career that can intentionally flex around life's unexpected demands and the constant change of a global economy, not one that shatters when real life happens or volatility hits. I've had multiple career reorientations along the way, knowing complacency is not an option.

 	- **Find Your Anchor:** When the high-velocity professional world is spinning and volatile, your family is the anchor that reminds you of your true purpose.

 	- **Chase the Thing You Want to Chase:** Your biggest personal pivot begins when you finally choose to listen to the quiet, internal voice telling you to leave certainty for a deeper, personal purpose. When I quit the corporate world, I knew something big was happening with global networking, and I wanted to be a part of it.

 	- **Know When to Pivot:** The best time to start over is the day you recognize you've authentically outgrown your old path and know you need to begin your next one. Don't get stuck - change when you need to.

 	- **Velocity of Output:** Your capacity for consistent, high-speed execution—the simple, daily act of doing the work—is the single greatest personal predictor of your long-term success. High-speed execution? I wrote and co-wrote 34 books about the Internet, technology, and trends from 1994 to 2001! That's high-speed execution right there!

 	- **The Inaction Trap:** Be aware that aggressive indecision is a slow poison; never let a craving for clarity paralyze your ability to get things done.

 	- **The Half-Life of Knowledge:** Never believe that the degree you earned or the skills you mastered yesterday will guarantee your future relevance. The moment you stop learning is the moment your potential begins to expire.

 	- **Know Your Responsibility:** Always remember that true career security is found not in a title, but in what you know - and what you know you can do with it.

 	- **Pursue Your Multipotentiality:** Your biggest advantage is your relentless curiosity across diverse fields; innovation lives at the powerful intersection of your unique, varied skills. Do many things, even if you don't do them extraordinarily well.

 	- **The Danger of Past Success:** Never let the emotional weight of your past successes crush the enormous potential of your future self.

 	- **Choose Peace over Title, or Money over Family:** Never regret a decision to choose peace and mental health over a prestigious, soul-crushing job, or turning down that big dot.com opportunity to spend more time with your family.

 	- **The Power of Self-Titling:** The title you choose to give yourself, such as innovator, creator, or parent, is infinitely more important than the one once given to you by a corporation.

 	- **The Right Question:** Stop asking, "What if I fail?" and always stay focused on the only question that matters: "What if I never try at all?"

 	- **Guard Your Health:** Treat your personal vitality as the most precious, finite commodity you own; allocate it with a deliberate, relentless intention.

 	- **Your Story is Your Currency:** Your unique, messy, imperfect story is your most valuable currency; use it to inspire others, not as something that needs to be hidden. Accept that perfection is never possible; mistakes are part of your progress.

 	- **Stop Asking Permission:** Stop waiting for a formal 'sign' or someone else's permission to chase your opportunity; just start showing up as the person you know you want to become.

 	- **Busyness vs. Impact:** Never confuse frantic busyness with profound impact; your deepest contributions require quiet, focused space (like writing 44 books!).

 	- **The Gift of Pride:** The greatest gift you can give your future self is a proud memory of when you dared to take the bold decisions you needed to make along the way.

 	- **Failure as Tomorrow's Tuition:** View every mistake you've made as the tuition you've paid to get ready for tomorrow. Transition from the shame of making an error to the fierce pride of sharing the hard-earned lesson.

 	- **Discomfort is OK:** The inevitable path to achieving your most important goal runs straight through the middle of profound personal and professional discomfort.

 	- **Volatile Momentum:** Treat economic volatility not as a stop sign, but as a proving ground: the courage you build in uncertainty will always fuel your recovery.

 	- **Irrational Optimism:** Nurture an insane optimism; it is the fuel that allows you to filter out the noise of fear and see opportunity where others see only threat.

 	- **Be True to Your Ethical Self, Always:** Never stray from your core belief that doing the right thing is the only thing. Make your personal ethical soul your very soul, and guard it jealously.

 	- **True Motivation is Discipline:** Show up. Know that the quiet, daily discipline of showing up for your purpose, even when you truly don't feel like it, is your ultimate strength.

 	- **Embrace the Mess:** Let go of the desperate need for perfection and embrace the chaos that is life, working at home, and forging a crazy career all at the same time.

 	- **Action Conquers Fear:** When fear whispers "not yet," answer back: "Watch me." The only true antidote to professional anxiety is immediate, bold motion.

 	- **The Final Measure:** Measure your ultimate success not by your bank account, but by the quality of your relationships and your profound sense of accomplishment.
