# Event Highlight: MAPP — Manufacturing Learns to Work With the Machines

At the Manufacturers Association for Plastic Processors conference in Indianapolis, I spent my keynote talking about AI in manufacturing. But AI was not really the whole story. The larger story was the convergence of intelligence, automation, data and industrial know-how. That convergence is beginning to reshape how manufacturers think about quality, design, uptime, productivity and the workforce. Machine vision can improve inspection and quality control while generating better production data. Robotics and cobots are becoming more flexible, which expands the range of tasks that can be automated economically. Digital twins allow products and processes to be simulated before physical production decisions are made. Predictive systems can identify equipment problems earlier and shift maintenance from reactive to proactive. And manufacturing careers themselves increasingly require a blend of process knowledge, software, automation, data and AI capability. That is why I challenged the MAPP audience to get beyond the AI hype. A tool is not a strategy. A chatbot is not an industrial transformation plan. AI becomes useful when it is connected to a real operational problem. Can it improve quality? Can it reduce downtime? Can it speed design? Can it improve a decision? Can it make a production process more resilient? Those are much better questions. Manufacturing organizations have another challenge as well: the speed of change. Innovation cycles are compressing. That means the ability to experiment and learn becomes an operating capability in its own right. I often describe that as building experiential capital. Try things. Learn what works. Understand what does not. Build practical organizational knowledge before everyone else does. That was the message I wanted the plastics manufacturers in Indianapolis to take home. The AI opportunity is not a single tool. It is the convergence of intelligence, automation, data and industrial know-how. Make it tangible. Learn quickly. Then scale what works.
