“It’s a better idea to create the future than to just show up for it.” – Futurist Jim Carroll

I admit to being often mystified.

Why have auto companies fought so hard against the inevitability of the transition to electric vehicles? Why would a union in the industry believe they could turn back this reality by shifting their political support? Why would auto dealers come to believe that if they fight hard enough, we won’t transition to a future in which we buy most cards online?

Why are there some people just so thoroughly against the idea of renewable energy, to such a degree that they engineer their own false fats to try to push back against it? Why do some people not understand that the science of battery technology balances out the ebb and flow of the spiky nature of the energy generation from these systems? Why can’t they understand that an old energy grid is disappearing while a new one is being born?

Why would otherwise intelligent people suddenly abandon the science of healthcare – the very science which has resulted in a doubling of human longevity – thus allowing them to spew their odd ramblings even longer through their life? Why would they come to support someone for political office who generates lies, falsehoods, and misinformation at scale, with the result that we will likely see an incase in once-vanquished diseases like polio, measles, and whooping cough? Why have people lost their collective sanity marbles to the insane ramblings of others?

Further – why do so many people try to ignore the future, and don’t put in the effort to try to get there? Why do so many people come to think that everyone else will end up in the future but that somehow, they won’t? Why do people come to believe that somehow, they can avoid the future? Why do so many people simply decide to participate in whatever future might happen, rather than taking the steps to try to create and engineer a better future for themselves?

Why do so many people fight the future? I mean, many of them are going to end up being there.

Why are so many people in denial of the future?

I am often mystified.
