Jim Carroll's keynote explored the future of skills, recruitment, the workforce and the organization at the 2022 E-Recruitment Congress in Ostend, Belgium. The keynote, "Recruiters Needed To Become Futurists," laid out the challenge and the path forward. Recruiters were facing skills shortages, new career models, hybrid work and candidates whose expectations had changed permanently. Six trends are shaping that shift. Skills Acceleration. The right skill at the right time was becoming more important as knowledge and careers changed faster. Digital Presence. Employer image now extended into every digital interaction, from recruitment to onboarding. Hybrid Work. The pandemic had accelerated virtual work and changed what employees expected from organizations. Jobs Not Yet Invented. Recruiters increasingly needed to hire for roles and capabilities that didn't yet have familiar labels. Just-In-Time Workforce. Organizations were assembling specialized talent when and where it was needed, rather than relying only on fixed structures. Lifestyle Over Career. A new generation was less willing to sacrifice flexibility and life priorities for traditional career models. The future of recruiting, Jim told the Ostend audience, is faster, more digital, more specialized — and far less traditional. Jim opened this keynote from a hidden green-screen studio on stage before the curtains parted to reveal he was there in person — a small piece of theater that made the point of the talk before he'd said a word: what looks virtual is often more real than it appears.
