“You don’t need a sign to tell you that your ability to change your future is a sure sign of a better future!” – Futurist Jim Carroll

I had a bit of a hard time figuring out my direction this morning, and couldn’t quite find a signpost for my focus! This goes back, I suppose, to that song that was popular ‘back in the day:

Sign, sign
Everywhere a sign
Blockin’ out the scenery
Breakin’ my mind
Do this, don’t do that
Can’t you read the sign?

But as I worked with multiple variations on the theme, I realized I was onto something! After all, people seem to seek signs to tell them what to do, what not to do, what will happen, what won’t happen, what is going on, and what is not going on. That might be a refect of the uncertainty, indecision, and lack of clarity that we are challenged with throughout our lives. And so while we are busy looking for signs to give us guidance as to what we should or should not be doing or thinking, often the answer is right in front of us – we don’t need a sign. We already know!

This implies that we should perhaps spend more time acting rather than thinking! Don’t seek a sign – go with what you already know to be true!

Because after all, “you don’t need a sign to tell you that inaction is a sure sign of impending failure!”

“You don’t need a sign to tell your inability to change is a sure sign of impending failure!”

“You don’t need a sign to tell you that denial of reality is a sure sign of future failure!”

The idea plays out in multiple ways and can be a good way to think about the signs you are seeing in your own life that you shouldn’t be wasting time on.

“You don’t need a sign to tell your lack of initiative is a sure sign of indecision!”

“You don’t need a sign to tell you that inaction is a sure sign of impending failure!”

“You don’t need a sign to tell you that thinking small is a sure sign of missed opportunities!”

“You don’t need a sign to tell you that excuses are a sure sign of denial!”

And on it goes.

Stop seeking signs!
