“Do a ‘habit inventory.’ Break them. Repeat this on a regular basis!” – Futurist Jim Carroll

Make it a habit to break your bad habits!

Is that a contradiction?

Maybe not — you should use a good habit to get rid of the other ones!

Over 25 years, I’ve seen a lot of organizations miss out on a lot of opportunity because they allow habits to kill their initiative. Habits are the source of the plaque that builds up that causes organizational sclerosis.

The result?

Organizations develop routines which stifle their ability to innovate, change and adapt to our faster world. They keep doing the same old thing, when the assumptions behind that thing no longer apply.

They develop corporate cultures which reward uniformity of action rather than diversity of thinking. They allow too much structure to smother the opportunity that might come from imaginative thinking.

You probaby do this personally too – you develop a comfort zone that guides your every day action. You lose out on spontaneity, living in the now, spur of the moment opportunities.

Habits, routine and structure are the enemies of innovation. They destroy creativity. They inhibit your future. They hold your back.

Habits lock us into patterns that has us doing today what we did yesterday, when there is often no similarity in the circumstances of the day. Even more challenging? Tomorrow will be even more dramatically different – so how will your habits serve you then.

Find habits! Break them!
