The only restriction on the scope of your future comes from the boundaries you’ve defined in your mind. Throw away the barriers, and come explore tommorrow with me!” – Futurist Jim Carroll

Jim Caroll during the plenary 2 session at IRU World Congress at OCEC in Muscat, Oman, on November 7, 2018.

People think too small, and yet we live in an era in which extraordinary things are happening.

We are learning to utilize gene therapy to come up with highly targeted, precision medical solutions. We’re moving beyond the era of oil into a world dominated by renewable, smart, connected energy. We’re witnessing the arrival of bold concepts with farming involving robotics that move us to a time of 24 hour farming. We’re discovering that we can actually engineer vehicles that are primarily electric, providing a massive reduction in overall carbon output.

Not with me on this? Stuck on the problems of today? Overwhelmed by some of the idiotic thinkers that seem intent on dragging us back to the 20th century?

As optimists will always suggest to you: “this too shall pass.” I remain firmly in the camp of those who see the future and see potential – not someone who sees a trend and sees a reason to fight it.

The interesting thing about the time we live in is that the political process, while massively broken, bears no resemblance to the actual investments being made on the ground.

And so while old people tear apart the fabric and structure of the tools we put in place to battle against global warming, they won’t be around forever. While legacy companies pursue lawsuits to battle business model change, they’ll eventually disappear. While baby boomers use the magic that is global connectivity to destroy mature discourse, the younger generation of people, weaned on social media, just might return our world to sanity.

My job on stage is to bring people into the real trends – scientific, technological, demographic and otherwise – that are defining the opportunity of our future world. I can’t do much about the idiots, but I can paint a pathway forward that is full of opportunity – if you want to have a mindset to pursue.

And to do that – you need to keep your faith in the future!
