When I walk out on stage, one of the first things I do for the audience it explain to them why I am there!

Most of them have a rough idea – they’ve heard that a futurist will be speaking. But what does that really mean?

The other day in San Francisco I explained it within a minute in an eloquent way – I am there to help them understand the trends that are bubbling around out there, what they might mean, how they might come together to impact the people and industries in the room – and what opportunities and challenges these trends might present.

If you are traveling to the future, you need to be prepared with good information that will help you get to your destination.

Just as it is with air travel I’m in Spokane, Washington, for a keynote later today for the Northwest Farm Services Credit Coop annual conference. I was supposed to come in nonstop via San Francisco but became aware two days earlier of potential weather challenges in SFO that might present themselves.

So what did I do? I studied the trends, understood their potential impact, and began making alternative plans. The night before, I rebooked my travel to go SFO-SEA-Spokane. Good thing, since my original flight was canceled.

People plan for travel with good insight and awareness. Why not do the same thing in the future?
